best way to mill outside contour

Post by Black Forest »

In the picture I have a part I want to mill out of a piece of steel 500mm x 200mm x20mm. The part is only 140mm at it's widest point and 480mm at it's longest point. This will be milled to the full 20mm depth of material. My first inclination is to do a 2D contour the width of the cutter around the outside of the part. I don't think it would be a good idea to do an adaptive clearing as that will require a lot of extra cutting and just waste time and wear on tools. The part will have interior features also milled. My plan is to do the inside features first and then bolt the part down on the inside and then cut the outside contour with the extra material on the outside clamped down. I don't have a bandsaw capable of doing a rough cut.

How would you all mill the outside contour?

10mm 3 flute end mill, 2D contour with 3° ramp, multiple depth max. 5mm, one spring pass for nice finish.

I would use blue 3M tape and CA to glue it on a piece aluminum.

Thanks. I have already made a fixture plate to mount the material to. This is the main plate for some belt grinders I am building for Christmas gifts to some friends of mine. I will probably make four complete units.

Really depends on how clean you want the walls to be. Here are some idea.

1) Tabs - this will require cleanup of the walls
2) Mill the hole feature, use that to run a screw with washer or something to hold down the part.
3) Consider adding some holes to the part to bolt thru.

BTW - If anyone in power is reading this, it would really be great to have a "machining" forum, so guys can kick around ideas and strategies separately from the acorn information forum.

Thats my tape an CA fixturing. Very fast to set up and works ok for flat parts with not to heavy milling and the part should not get to hot while machining.
