Can I change the parameters in the Torch Calibration Program

Post by TAS99 »

I'm at the point where I am calibrating the torch on my plasma cutter but the program states that it will cut a 54 inch line. That is more than the steel I have and a bit beyond my table limits. Can I change those cutting parameters? If so, how do I do so?

If I knew a bit more I might be able to modify the program but that is yet to be learned so if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Regards,

Tom

I might have missed something.

As I look at the program the 50.8 in line seems to be a metric size. Inches would be 2". I'm sure I see all non-metric readings in every display so I haven't set it for metric yet it's clear the prompt reads it will cut a 54+"

Any idea why it wants a metric size?

When you installed the CNC12 plasma software did you choose imperial or metric as your unit of measurement??

I'm sure I would have chosen Imperial when doing the setup and all the displays are in inches so I'm assuming I'm in Imperial not Metric.

I've included a couple of screen shots that may be helpful. #1 shows the display message with the cut length 54 inches. If it were Metric wouldn't it say mm and why 54 inches?

#2 shows a circle. If it were cutting a line wouldn't it display a line of some sort?

It's confusing to me and I hope someone can help with my understanding of what the problem might be.

Regards,

Tom

I do see 4 digits after the decimal point which tells me it's inches (metric shows 3 digits) and it also shows a feed rate in inches. At the top of your first photo it shows line 98 and is says "if 4006==20...." which is a system variable, and 20 is imperial and 21 is metric. I wont be back at the shop until tomorrow but hopefully Keith or Joey will chime in here.

As for your second pic, the dot, not a circle, is the tool tip, in this case the torch tip.

Did you edit the macro in any way? Make any other system changes after the install??

I made no changes to either the macro or the system. I've been following the Plasma Users Manual and so far all has been good. This is the first real issue I've had.

Hello TOM,
What profile/material are you using for the Calibration Cut?

Thanks for posting the report.zip. Here are my observations and advice.

1.) I see you have an A axis. From looking at the settings it looks like you are trying to pair the A axis with the X axis?

Fyi..when you give an axis a Label (A,B,W etc) by definition that is an independent axis.

If you want to pair two axis motors together there are a number of ways of doing it. Labeling the 4th axis “A” is not one of them. Follow the guidelines in the Acorn Axis pairing manual. Download link is here.

https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... _guide.pdf

2.) the X axis and the A axis have a very low turns ratio value (.361”) which is outside of the mechanical sweet spot for Plasma. (see Acorn Plasma Manual for more info on this) I would guess that this machine has the pinion directly connected to the Axis motor shaft with no reduction? If so, install a belt drive reduction unit (like the popular 3:1 Avid unit) or go first class and install a 5:1 planetary gear box to adjust the mechanical advantage of the motor into the sweet spot for plasma for the best results.

3.) minor....Set to 1920x1080 resolution display, CNC12 and VCP is designed for 1920x1080. r u using a laptop?

4.) Run the Calibration macro while in “G code view” so you don’t get the big white circle. (this is going to be updated in next release)

5.) use 1/4" thick material or thicker to run torch calibration, make sure its perfectly flat, see Acorn Plasma install manual for more info on this.
