Closed loop Stepper question

Post by dovrosenberg »

I am trying to get my first drive to move. X and Y motors are NEMA 34 using CL86T closed loop stepper drivers. I have 60 vdc going to the motors. I am wired per drawing S15207 (hopefully). When I power things up the acorn looks like the right lights are green (I only have 1 motor connected to X at the moment). I mapped IN5 to Drive1OK. Wasn’t sure how to map the other drives since the drawing shows drive1,2,3 all tied together on IN5. When I try to move the X axis the EN1 light goes RED instead of GREEN and the drive doesn’t move.

It seems like acorn thinks the motor is not enabled when EN1 is red. If I power cycle the acorn, EN1 is green until I try jogging the X.

This is my first time using closed loop stepper motors and drivers. I verified I have 60vdc at the power input to the driver. I have a solid green light on the driver

I disconnected the other motors ALM+ wires and now EN5 stays green but when I try to jog the X the estop kicks off

Are there some g-code commands that are needed to enable a drive prior to usage?

Attached is the latest report. A couple of things I noticed. The schematic S15207says to wire the signals using the 5vdc for DIR+, PUL+, and ENA+. The driver has an option to use 24vdc. I watched a video where the guy was using CL86Y driver with acorn and he used the 24vdc and wired it directly to the ST1, DR1 ports on the board instead of going thru the DB25 breakout board using 5vdc. Would this be a better configuration for the CL86T than the 5vdc set up in the drawing? There is a switch on the driver to use either 5vc or 24vdc

i disconnected all the drives except Drive 1 (X). As soon as I try to jog the drive it throws a 9031 Drive Fault error

I finally got the first drive to work!! I had to invert the DriveOK on IN5. BTW - the drive works using the 24vdc input

Great!

These stepper drives call that an "Enable" signal but it is more like a "Disable" Signal. If nothing is hooked up to the Enable signal the Drive will run since it is enabled by default.

Drive Fault is due to the Alarm input Triggering. Always worth a shot to Invert that input.

Yes the Drives will work hooked up to the Acorns Open collectors.

Is the Acorn Open Collectors the 24vdc inputs instead of the 5vdc DB25 connector? The one video I watched implied that the 24vdc interfaces are less susceptible to EMI interference than the 5vdc interface provides. The schematic should either be updated or a new one created to provide better guidance

That is a 5V stepper drive and should be wired to the DB25 per the diagram. All the switch on the drive does is introduce a current limiting circuit inside the drive when you use 24V.

9.5 out of 10 stepper drives work best using 5V and the DB25.
