New Build. can't get motion. Koike Monograph w/ Acorn CNC Plasma & Stepperonline

Post by jrmworks »

Hello Everyone, I am converting a 2001 Koike Aronson Monograph plasma to centroid. I am using Stepperonline motors and drives.
For the X and Y axis, they are both TS Series 1 Axis 12.0Nm(1699.34oz.in) Nema 34 Closed Loop Stepper with CL86T drives. I will be running Gam #700614 10:1 gearboxes.
The Z (torch height) axis is TS Series 1 Axis 3.0Nm(424.83oz.in) Nema 23 Closed Loop Stepper with a CL57T drive.
I have wired up the acorn controller and THC but have not been able to get movement from the drives. I am running a bd25 connector and configured the wizard for it. Attached is a fresh report as well as pictures of the equipment. I have not yet installed to motors onto the machine; I wanted to get things moving on the bench first. Can anyone provide any input on what i should do or have done wrong? Thanks Jason

Hi Jason, are the motors locked when you power up the system and drives? Is the slide switch on the top of the drive for 5V-24V operation in the 5V position? Let's start here and we can try a few things once we know if the drives are locked or not. You may not need the enable lines but lets try one thing at a time.

What wiring diagram number(s) did you follow?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the drives are locked when powered up. The slide switches are in the 24v position. Here's the wiring diagram I used. https://www.centroidcnc.com/dealersuppo ... 207.r1.pdf
Thanks again. Jason

If that's the diagram you used then the switch needs to be in the 5v position as those are 5v drives.

If your stepper is locked when you first start the machine but goes limp when you try to home you may need to invert the enable pin. This is done in the wizard. Image attached for reference.

Thanks Everyone, I switched the drives to 5v and my axis configuration already matched the screen shot. I still can't get motion when jogging each axis but I do now get a blip of motion when I turn on or off the control. What's next? Thanks

Disconnect the enable wire from the acorn and see if you get motion.

Yes, as mentioned, disconnect the enable wire as the drives could be enabled by default. Also, I'd suggest you take the "DRIVEOK" out of your inputs for now until you get motion. No need for the alarm signal until you get things moving. You can always hook it back up later. Start with the bare minimum wiring until you get motion.

I disconnected enable 1, 2, and 3 as well as the drive ok wire. Still no motion. Red light is blinking on the drives now. What do you all think I should try next? Thanks

hmm.... Can you post some more pictures of the Acorn - drive wiring.

When viewing the current cabinet picture it seems the drives are not connected to the Acorn or breakout board?

Id like to be able to trace out every connection from the Acorn to the drives.
