Spindle Stop Button Function

Post by CharlesRohland »

Hi All,

During our bench testing we were running a test program, spindle was running in auto and servo motors are turning as per the program, all working as it should. Servo motors are not yet mechanically connected.

We happened to push the spindle stop button, (not the E Stop) which stopped the spindle, but the servo motors continued with the program.

We realised that if the servo motors were mechanically connected, this would have been a crashed tool!!

Surely the spindle STOP button should not be available/active when running a program?

Is this normal or have I got something wrong?

Thanks Charles

That is by design. It has been standard Centroid PLC logic for many years.

In Auto spindle mode, you can pause the spindle by pressing the spindle stop key, and then restart it by pressing the spindle start key. This allows tool inspection, part inspection, chip clearing, etc. during the program cycle.

It has always been the responsibility of the operator to choose when it is appropriate to pause the spindle.

Arguably, the system could be more idiot-proof if spindle pause were only permitted when Feed Hold is active, or while waiting at an M0 or M1. Of course, that would require further logic, either to restart the spindle automatically when Feed Hold is canceled via Cycle Start; or to prohibit using Cycle Start to cancel Feed Hold unless/until the spindle is restarted.

i use spindle stop all the time to turn off the spindle during a "dry run" where the axis motors keep moving
same with flood and mist etc.
