CNC11-D for CPU10 V2.72

Three years ago replaced pendant motherboard due to electrolytic capacitor failures. Problem solved.
Two years ago replaced DC310 due to X-axis problem. Problem solved.

Yesterday, then again this morning, during start-up, the pendant screen remained dark.
I heard the power come on and saw the spindle brake activate but screen still dark.
Pressed the pendant start button and watched the quill and table move thru their normal limit sequence.
After maybe a minute the screen came on slowly, faint at first but over a few seconds came to normal brilliance.
Any ideas appreciated.

This is not an uncommon failure with LCD panels.

Centroid sells replacement LCD panels, with the aluminum bezel and PC sheet metal, for around $1K.

Installation is a little fiddly, due to changing ideas about where to put the LCD controller board (behind the motherboard vs. on the side wall vs. on the top wall) and where to put the power supply (upper right of inner enclosure, vs. outside the inner enclosure, hanging from the ceiling of the black outer enclosure).

Purchased 14169 CNC LCD Replacement (with motherboard wrap)), received this morning.
Did a search of the tech bulletins, found #54 LCD Glass replacement and #315 connector info.
Would be helpful if someone has a step-by-step procedure available they could share.
Don't want to dis-assemble more than is absolutely required.

Can't help you there, sorry. Every one that I have installed has been a little different, and required more or less creativity to fit the motherboard in the new surround while accommodating the LCD controller board and micro-ATX power supply.

Here is an installation with a surround similar to what you probably have (LCD board on right side wall): This was a panel-mount installation in the door of a large cabinet, so there was ample room for a full-size ATX supply below the console face.

Here is an M400S console with the micro-ATX supply mounted to the ceiling, left of the PC: That is likely what you will need to do.

If you are uncertain how to proceed, post a picture of the enclosure that you received. Maybe also a picture of your previous installation, so we know what kind of motherboard and power supply you have.

As CNCSNW stated a photo of what you currently have would allow us to provide further insight for your specific setup.

The exact instructions vary based on the specific motherboard used and the configuration it was installed in.

However the basic principle is the same. The motherboard with everything plugged into it will need to be transferred from the old screen / wrap to the new one. Before taking anything apart see where everything is currently placed, taking special care to see what fibers go where on the CPU10. We recommend taking pictures to make it easier. Unplug the fibers/encoders, then remove power cables, the CPU10, flashcard reader, etc. from the motherboard. Then remove the motherboard from the old setup by unscrewing the screws. Move the motherboard to the new wrap and mount it first. Then move the CPU10 board over and slot it into the PCI slot. At this point you will see where you have space to mount the LCD board so the cable reaches to the VGA input on the motherboard. The position of the CPU10 board varies because the PCI slot positions varied on each motherboard so the position of the LCD board will be custom based on your motherboard. Plug in the VGA cable from the LCD board into the motherboard along with the flash card reader, the exact order is not important as long as everything is plugged back in. Then plug power cables back in to all components. Lastly plug in the fibers / encoders to the CPU10 board. You should now be ready to power up.

What model motherboard do you have?

If the motherboard extends at all to the right of the right-hand mounting screws, then that position for the LCD controller board is probably unworkable (unless your motherboard is conveniently equipped with a large hole for the VGA cable to pass through). In that case, you will need to remount the LCD controller on the right side wall.

Having a floppy disk drive is a further complication, because you would like to be able to remount the mATX power supply on the ceiling, outside of the PC surround. Since you are running CNC10 v2.72, you have good USB and network support. You could probably retire the floppy drive to make room.

Here are a couple pictures of a ca. 2005 M400 console with a replacement LCD. As shipped from Centroid, the LCD controller was on the top wall, with the VGA cable passing between the motherboard mounting posts. Not wanting to cut a hole in the motherboard, I moved the LCD board to the right side.

Motherboard is refurbished MSI PM8M-V, no large hole available.
Kept the old board thinking I'd replace the swollen caps someday.
I'll try your 'right side' approach and probably remove the floppy drive.

Looking at your photo, is there a reason the ribbon cable is not connected to the Button Board?
I see 8 wires in my ribbon cable, 10 pins in the Button Board connector, two outside pins unused?
