V2XT HI\LOw gear setup issue

Post by jrrhotrod »

Hi guys, SORRY I am baffled again LOL! I am nearing the finish line with my Bridgeport V2XT conversion. I have passed the test and have everything is working smoothly I have even run a few simple programs on it and it worked great. but I have a issue with the the HI\LOW range I can not figure out how to set up low range to spin in the forward direction. In high gear when I go to MDI mode and type in say S1500M3 the spindle turns on and rotates the proper direction but will not spin with a M4 command. When I put the shift lever in low gear and do a S330M3 I get no spindle movement . When I do a S330M4 command it will start to spin but in reverse. So high range seems fine with a M3 command but low range only spins with M4 command and spins reverse. I am not sure what to look at to correct this I dont see a detailed explanation anywhere in the manual that tells how to set this up unless I missed something. Anyone have any suggestions or possibly know where the issue would be at.

I guess another question I was wondering about is if I can do both M3 and M4 commands on a bridgeport mill with the high/low range gear selector or is it possibly locked out in the software to were it wont accidently spin in reverse if the HIgh\Low is switched. SO for example if I was in High range should I be able to put in a M3 command have it spin forward then do a M4 command and have it spin reverse or could the software keep it from doing the M4. I only ask because I thought I read a Post about this possibly being this way on these type of geared mills.

Thanks for any input.

So it sounds like whatever method you use to get power to your spindle motor works for a forward-run command (which is what is used with M3 in high range, and with M4 in low range); but does not work for a reverse-run command (M4 or high range, or M3 in low range).

This does not sound like it has anything to do with high gear vs. low gear: it has to do with forward-run vs. reverse-run.

Are you using a VFD, or contactors?

If you swap your wires on OUT8 (so the forward-run is connected to OUT8 N.O. and reverse-run is connected to OUT8 N.C.) does it then run (the wrong way, of course) with an M4 in high gear, and fail to run with an M3 in high gear? Or does it still run (albeit the wrong way) with M3 in high gear, and still fail to run with M4 in high gear? That will tell you whether your problem is with the OUT8 relay, or with the downstream wiring between the PLC and your VFD or contactor coils.

Note that most VFD's allow you, by VFD parameter setting, to prohibit running the motor in reverse. If you have a VFD, and you have inadvertently set such a prohibition, then it would do what you are describing.

Yep it was in the vfd once I got the right parameter set for the vfd it actually spins forward and reverse now. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it just needed that nudge in the right direction.
