what is involved in pinning the variable clutch on an R2E4 Bridgeport to use a vdf to control the speed of the spindle

basically you just want to stop the crank handle pin which is rotated by the air motor from moving. so any way you come up with do achieve that goal will be fine.

Although it is somewhat more work, you would be better off in the long run if you removed the vari-speed sheaves altogether and replaced them with fixed-pitch sheaves.

I think Dwayne Elrod can supply the necessary hardware.

Fixed-pitch sheaves will run cooler, quieter, more efficiently, and more consistently.

What are folks doing about tensioning the belts once fixed pulleys are added?

If you do not want to pin the clutch we offer fixed taperlock pulleys with belts to accomplish your task at hand!
Adjusting belt tension by swiveling the motor on its mounts.
