Keep SimoDrive 611 ?

Post by FlyingHaggis »

Preparing for an upgrade of a VMC600.
Question would be should I keep the Simodrive 611 (save money) or replace with something modern ?

Pros/Cons as to what would be the better path ?

I did keep mine and got it working good so far. I did change the main encoders on the servos. does yours have two encoders on the servos? one to the controller and one to the 611 drive?

I'll check mine to see.

You changed the encoders due to a problem or there was another benefit.

What sort of backlash should I see on the X & Y axis ?

I'm seeing about 0.02mm on a A -> B -> A move
and it's bang on if I do a A -> B -> C (back past B) -> A

I did change out my 500 encoder with a 10000 encoder from centroid. Was told that 500 line was to little.

Do you have the encoders feeding the..

a) the SimoDrive
or
b) Into the OAK controller

... or
c) both of the above, with two separate encoders per axis?

Two separat encoders per axis. I only changed out the 500 line that was hooked up to the heidenhain 407 controller with the 10000 line hooked to centroid oak. The encoder going the the simodrive is only there for the pid reference to the drive, thats my understanding anyway. I did not changed anything on the pid dials on the simodrive just did the velocity pid ajustment in the cnc12 software and did get it dial in good with minor tweaks only.

I don't fully understand when you say "two separate encoders per axis".
If possible can you explain a bit more.

He has one encoder providing feedback to the servo drive and one encoder providing feedback to the Oak controller for each axis. Normally the servo drives provide a pass-through encoder connection for the controller, but you don't have to use it.
