MPG not working and DMM Zaxis faulting

Post by 40xtech »

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reading, we're having a number of issues getting this custom built cnc machine operating smoothly.

Item 1- Can't get the wireless MPG working, it seems to have wireless connectivity as it shows the icon in the top corner but in the CNC12 software the MPG led will not illuminate. I've followed the steps in the manual and I think I have everything configured correctly.

Item 2- quadrature errors on all drives, x,y, and z. For now they are being ignored and the machine seems to run fine. I'm not clearly understanding how the Centroid and DMM are interacting. Do these errors even matter? If I understand correctly, the DMM drive is closing the loop on the position, not the Centroid software so I don't understand why the Centroid is even paying attention to the encoder. I would think it should just be listening for a fault from the DMM but like I said, I don't clearly understand the relationship these devices have.

Item 3- DMM Drive Z has been faulting out. 95% of the time the red and green led drive lights are lit solid, no flashing. I have seen the lights flashing but I have no idea what the patterns mean, I can not find a list of flash codes. Using the DMM provided test cable I can connect to the drive and read the faults. Usually it says on position, but it has also said lost phase and over heating(can't remember exact wording).

So a bit about our machine, we are using 1.3kw DYN4 drives, we have one zaxis with a 5:1 gear reduction and electric brake. Our Y axis is a single 1.3kw motor with 3:1 gear reduction, no brake, and our x axis is two 1.3kw motors with no brakes, they are coupled in the software.

Our gantry is rather large and sees very little load, this is setup as a 3d printer so there is mostly inertia and it's own weight to overcome. The payload on the Z axis is roughly 10-15kg.

*NEW* added info about our win 10 pc computer:
10th Gen Intel Core i3-10110U Dual-Core 2.10 GHz Processor (4MB SmartCache, Boost up to 4.10 GHz)
8GB DDR4 2666MHz Memory, 256GB NVMe Solid State Drive, Intel UHD Graphics, Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
Wireless-AX MAC 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.0, Gigabit Ethernet Controller, High Definition Audio
3 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type A, 1 x Thunderbolt 3 / Type C, 1 x USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (Fast-Charging), 1 x HDMI 2.0

On the fourth page of the Alt-i screen, what value do you see for variable W34 when you have the increment knob on x10, and you turn the axis knob variously to the "X", "Y", and "Z" positions?

W34 shows 0.0000 and does not change while turning the knob in either x,y, or z.

Also, just to note, the led is not lit on the MPG button

Any ideas? Is my request for help incomplete and missing some essential details?

It seems you have the WMPG configured correctly in parameters.
You might reach out to Centroid, to take a look. It is possible you may have a bad Wireless MPG
Where is your WMPG antenna? On the cabinet? Have you tried a different USB port?

As to your Encoder quadrature errors. Did you make up your own signal cables from Oak to the DYN4 DB25? Or did you buy them from DMM? If you made up your own cables, try soldering the signal cable drain wire to the DB25 Shell.

On your Z axis faulting, when it faults, did you use the DMMDRV software to see what the fault is?
Have you used DMMDRV to Tune the axis?
I had to use a braking resistor on the Z axis on the mill I retrofitted some time ago. That cured the Z axis faults. You will notice there are terminals on the front of the DYN4 drive for such a resistor. You will have to consult with DMM for the proper value IF needed.

Just some suggestions....
Marty

Also, a properly sized line reactor is almost always required for DYN4 drives. Automationdirect.com sells them. You need to size it appropriately. Put it on the line side of the Estop contactor providing power to the drives.

I didn't see one in your cabinet photos.

The DYN4 drives will fault if you even look at them sideways! Possibly the tuning settings are too aggressive. The auto tune function on the drives seems to not work very well and manual tuning can be done. Using the sine wave function in the DMM software on 16384 steps is a good way to do manual tuning to get a starting point. Then big step moves.

The drives have an output current and position error analog input. You can watch them on an oscilloscope to monitor the drives current and also see position error while tuning. Watch out for oscillations, but you will hear it before you can see it.

If you see the output current go to above about 3V then you will probably get a over current fault. If you run them at excessive current for too long at higher current, then over temp fault. The most common fault is lost phase. This means either an encoder error or that the actual position got more than 90 degrees away from the commanded position. DMM support is pretty good and should help you get it sorted.

I hang way more than 15kg off a Z axis and have no over current or over temp faults, but can get lost phase if I try accelerate it too hard.

I don't use a line reactor. They are really only required as the drives have no line filtering built in so can cause a lot of noise on the power supply. Mess up your TV and upset the neighbors, that kind of stuff! You should fit the input filters to the logic supply as DMM recommends to help keep the main power supply noise off the drives logic supply input. If you need EMC compliance for your machine then line filtering will definitely be required to pass conducted emissions!

Has DMM been of any help?
