The Y axis is good?
I don't know, given the time and trouble, unknown age, I would have replaced them all. Just a cost of the conversion. My .02

I have my avionics guy at work looking at my X encoder. I really appreciate the data sheet on that, too, could not find it elsewhere.
If he can't do anything with it, I'll give it a shot myself with this method. I thought I had a power supply hanging around somewhere, I'll have to root around for it. I wonder if an old PC power supply would suffice (as it has a 5 volt output). I do have an oscilloscope that I picked up some time ago but never learned how to use. I knew it'd come in handy one day.
I understand Marty's sentiment about just replacing the encoders to save time and money, but I am on a tight budget and I would if money were no object. As I've mentioned, if comes down to it, I will jus bite the bullet and move forward (they'd be better quality anyhow). This thing has been down for a long time, a few more delays won't kill me and I enjoy the learning process.

Yes, the 5V from an old PC power supply would suffice for testing encoders.
Note that if you put your meter's test leads from, for example, A to /A (instead of from A or /A to COM) then you can more quickly verify that you always have a differential voltage. The meter should read either positive three or four Volts, or negative three or four volts, depending on the encoder position.
If you ever see 0V from A to /A, or from B to /B or from Z to /Z, then either the line driver is not working, or you have your channels crossed up.
For example, if what you thought was /A is in fact B, so you are measuring the difference between A and B, then as you turn the encoder you would sometimes see a positive differential voltage; sometimes a negative differential voltage; and (about half the time) see zero.

That would work just fine. Make sure you have the 5v output as there also is a 12v output for computers.
Just do the multimeter test and you will know if it is blown or not. You stated the machine ran before, so unless you did something really wrong, they should be fine. I am running early 90's 1000 line encoders on my machine and they are just fine. No need to replace what is not broken. The small stuff adds up really fast on these conversions.

A little wall wart with 5VDC output would work too...
Your Y axis IS or is not working? If it is, you have something you can use for a reference for the other two.
Swap the X and Y servos and see what happens. (Power and encoder cables)

I thought the Y *was* working at one point. I was getting strange results every time I powered up. The screen showed errors in X, Y, and Z, but the report showed Y as ok, but not X and Z. I tried swapping the cables around, didn't see any changes (all three bad). I never see the dialogue on the screen change, not sure if it's not changing, or it's just so damn fast that I am missing it (there's no time stamp on the screen display). I don't have any power to the servo motors right now. Should I?? I thought I read that they get powered later so as to not destroy anything.
Right now, all three are failing consistently.

And there you go....the encoders are looking for motion and there is none because the motors can't move. Remove the motors or at least the belt if you can to test and make sure you don't have a run away.
If you can get into the menus then go to PID then Encoders. You should be able to see the encoder counts change even if you are in E-stop by turning the motor shaft.

DID you test to see if the encoders counted up and down in the PID screen as directed on page 33 of the installation manual? If so, then you move on to the next step in the manual.
