14. Clear Any Existing Faults Before Beginning Bench Testing. To confirm that all faults have been cleared before
continuing, press F3 MDI from the main menu. If all faults have been cleared correctly, the screen should look like Figure
4.1.14.
If the screen shown in Figure 4.1.14 is not displayed, there is an existing fault. Please check the status window to
determine the cause of the fault and then cleared of faults. Confirm that all parameters are set as required and that all
inputs (1-11 & 17-20 green) are in the correct state.
I have been over the settings a few times now, they all appear correct to me. Using the above test (F3 MDI) results in the screen flashing and going back to where it was (main screen, not the MDI screen). Not finding much information on finding and fixing faults. The report is Greek to me. Last error was "327 Fault Job Ended"
There is no rush to answer my questions. I know they are newbie and probably irritating, and I understand that you're busy and that there are others with issues, too. I'm trying.

You have encoder errors on X and Z axis. Did you wire up the DB9 connectors correctly and test?
Your Y axis seems OK?
You can see your error log by going to F7 Utilities, F9 Logs, F1 Errors.

Not sure what happened to my response. I thought I replied yesterday.
Yes, I did wire the DB9 connectors and tested them, double checked and triple checked. I will check them again.
Wondering if swapping locations of those connectors on the ALLIN1 would help pinpoint the cable or the encoder. The machine did run fine before powering down for the last time some 7 years ago.
I did scan my error log, but it made little sense to me. I am guessing from what you posted that the same error is recurring. It's kind of like the old school CNC controllers. If you had an error, it told you that you did, but not what the error was, or what to even look for. Unlike a modern controller, like a Haas that tells you exactly what the issue is, or at least what to start looking for.

Make sure you have X and Z connectors on the correct encoder ports

Can someone please explain to me the relationship between the shield and ground, and the two connections on my encoder labeled "G" and "CG"? Before I made new cables, my X and Y had ground wires going to the "G" connections, while the Z encoder did not have a ground wire. "CG" was empty and still is. Did I assume correctly that the old ground wires still need to be connected to the "G" lug like they were originally? I am having trouble understanding the encoder schematic with regard to the grounds. The other eight, color coded wires are fine, double and triple checked. I have the shield grounded to the DB9 body. I'm thinking that this might be where my encoder issues are coming from. The encoders were working fine when this machine last ran 10 years ago. I've written to the manufacturer of the encoders (BEI) to get some info but I haven't heard back yet. Thank you.

Ground should be the +5VDC supply COM
Shield is earthground and should be soldered to the shell. (Not tied to COM)

Probably "chassis ground" or "case ground", basically the same as "earth ground"
