Reusing Anilam snubbers & capacitor?

Post by Craig »

I am replacing a fully functional Anilam controller with AllIn1DC.

I attached photos of what was in the Anilam enclosure, can I reuse them or do I need to buy new?

More pics of those same Anilam parts

You can probably use those components. The cap is a little smaller than Centroid's (5000 vs. 12000 uFd), but if it was sufficient for the old system, then it will probably be sufficient with the Allin1DC.

The required cap size depends on the current drawn. A bigger capacitor will have less output ripple for a given current draw. Easily calculated if you have the numbers. But as mentioned if it was previously adequate then it would be a good place to start. You could always add another the same in parallel later if you need more.

After reading your two responses I was convinced to save the $120 and reuse my capacitor but buy this

Now I notice what it says, “requires a 12,000+ MFD or higher capacitor” and I wonder if the two components won’t work together?

That is meant to bolt on top of Centroid's capacitor. Since yours looks like a smaller diameter, it will probably be a hassle to hook up.

The only reason I would think it needs a capacitor "at least" that big would be due to the size of the bleed down resistor. Again, the size of the capacitor required is determined by the total current draw non the DC side.

If you already have the capacitor, do you not already have the rectifier?

Mine measures 1.125 also so it should bolt right on

I’m sure I do I just don’t know what I’m looking for and the same would be true for in rush protection, again I don’t know my electrical components well enough To know what I am looking for. Call I could post some more pictures if somebody thinks they can help me identify the rectifier, I just thought for the low dollar amount that they have on the Centroid rectifier I would buy it

Post up some pictures. The rectifier would have been between the capacitor and mains. Probably has a heat sink on it. It must have in rush protection or it would have blown up. There is no reason IMO not to use the centroid one if that gets you going quicker.
