The ethernet comment was an attempt to transfer files without usb, but from the bulletin even if I find a computer running windows xp, the version number is too old to use networking; correct?
Not correct. With CNC10 v2.30, you can set up the Linux system to read a Windows shared folder. You could then stand at the control and read files from the Windows computer.

You would need CNC10 2.61 or later to have the Linux system share folders with the Windows system, so that you could sit at the Windows computer and read files from the control.

"Active Directory" is something else entirely, and is probably not relevant to your situation.

SOLVED:
I cannot explain why this works, but in addition to the machine only RECOGNIZING certain usb sticks, it also will only READ the 3rd stick I plug in. The first recognizable stick displays as drive b), second one as drive e), third one as drive f). It will only read drive f).
It doesn't work if I plug and unplug the same stick 3 times, I need 3 usb sticks designated to making it read the 3rd one. As long as I leave the machine on, it will recognize that 3rd stick; but once I turn it off and back on I need to cycle through all 3 sticks again.

Upgrading to the latest version of CNC10 will help, but your PC has to support it, and would suggest you have Centroid preconfigure a new SSD for your system.
