Bridgeport Series 1 retrofit

Post by autodoorman »

Hi, I am retrofitting an old Bridgeport series one, Does any know what size of Transformer (T1) i would need if i didn't reuse the original Bridgeport transformers for the motor drive. i am using new 29lb Centroid motors / encoders?

There is a huge transformer installed ( as per attached pic of rating plate) but only 80v output, i thought i needed 110v or will the 80v once rectified do the job?

80VAC rectified (AC voltage 8 1.414) will give you about 113VDC. Reasonable if you ask me....
What is the name plate rating of your new servos?

You can use the 80V transformer with either the old-style Centroid 120VDC servos or the newer 180VDC servos. If you have the newer 180VDC servos you'll get better performance if you swap out the transformer for a 120VAC one.
Cheers,

Agreed Tom,
But that's why I asked which motors he has. I didn't want to ASSUME the motors he had were the 180VDC units, in which case I would have recommended the same thing. No transformer.

These users don't provide enough information, I don't want to "guess" what they have.

Sorry guys, but as a newbie we dont always know what to add,

Anyway these are new 180v centroid motors.

If i look to swop the transformer out for a new 120ac one, what sort of rating would it need to get?

Thanks
Brian

I believe Centroid sells a 2000VA transformer DC Servo Motor Power Supply 220 VAC to 117 DC volts $1140. VA rating should be the same even though you are looking for a 120VAC/170VDC solution. I used a 2400VA 220VAC to 120VAC transformer I found on eBay.
Cheers,

Tom

I would skip the transformer and bring in TWO circuits. One 120V 20A circuit and one 220VAC circuit for the VFD.
(You don't say what size spindle motor you have)
Follow the attached schematic.

Rectified 120VAC will give you 170VDC. If your motors are 29in-lb then buy one of these from Centroid:
