Mystery Emergency Stop

Post by Birleycnc »

I have an old, maybe 20 years, Vert CNC mill (B6AC) with an Umbrella ATC. We have never yet had it changing tools properly, always hit and miss. It would drop tools, stop or get 'lost' finding them, but have found and fixed a number of issues:

ATC sensor wire broken
Low air pressure.
Draw bar spring seized
Parameters set wrong.

It seems I have one more fault to fix. The machine stops with a warning that the emergency stop has been hit, when it has not!
So doing a test:
I put tools in 1 in spindle and 18 in T18 pocket
Using the ATC from the Centroid menu.

1, I can change T1 for T18 fine.
2, Then T18 back to T1 OK
3, But when I change from T1 to T18 the machine spins the spindle a bit for orientation then stops the tool change and centroid displays a message that an emergency stop has been pressed, and that its been released.

The above pattern is constantly repeatable, always stopping on a E stop when going T1 to T18 on step 3 above.

I have checked the air pressure and that's def OK. (no low pressure warning is issued, I have seen those before but not occurring here, I have also watched the air pressure switch contacts and they do not open)

After the stoppage, I checked the Tool settings and T18 is populated with Bin 024! All others are correct. Again consistent, same each time. Have done it 10 times.

I do an ATC reset and ATC initialisation to clear the faults. Or go in and amend the tool bin for T18 from 024 to Bin 018.

Any ideas what else can consistently give an emergency stop error that resets immediately? After working on this for ages I really feel I may almost be there!!

Thanks in advance.

CNC7 or CNC10?

Koyo PLC, or PLCIO2, or RTK3?

Maybe post a Report?
