Intel NUC mini-PC

Post by jshank1 »

Are the Intel NUC mini-pc suitable to run a "All-in 1-DC" servo CNC board. I would like to use one of these small footprints PC and locate it in a control panel along with the monitor, operator's control panel and a MPG.

As long as they meet the minimum computer specs they will work. The more recent Core i5 and Core i7 models paired with at least 4GB of RAM are good options. A majority of the rest of the models will not be powerful enough. Please see below for full details on minimum computer specifications:

Do you have any specific models you can recommend? I am at the point where I have to source the PC for my retrofit, and am considering 3 options: turn-key Ajax supplied cabinet mounted motherboard, self-built cabinet mount motherboard, or a NUC mini-PC. All things else being equal, I'd like to go the NUC mini-PC route due to space constraints.

Any of the 5th or 6th generation core i5 or i7 models should work. If you have something in mind let me know the model number and I can verify it for you.

I bought an Intel 5i5MYHE NUC. It was a package deal with Win7 home premium, 8GB RAM, and 256GB Intel SSD for $375.00 Seemed like too good of a deal to pass up and since it was an Ebay auction, I had to jump on it before getting a reply to this thread. I checked the benchmark rating for the processor and hope I interpreted the chart correctly with a score of 1531--but I thought that on a previous NUC and was informed otherwise by Scott (thankfully before I bought it). The previous owner had already installed the OS, RAM and SSD on this one. I am going to get in touch with him to confirm that no other software or antivirus was installed. If it was, is there a recommended procedure to wipe the drive to do a clean OS install? The specs he provided me are listed below. Since it only has one Ethernet port, that will be dedicated to the ALLIN1DC. It is my understanding I can achieve network connectivity via the dual band WiFi, correct?
Specs:
•5th generation Intel® Core™ i5-5300U vPro™ processor 2.3GHz up to 2.9GHz Turbo, Dual Core, 3MB Cache, 15W TDP
•Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM (KVR16LS11/8)
•Intel SSD 335 Series 2.5" SATA 6Gbps - 500 MB/s Sequential Read and 450 MB/s Sequential Write - (SSDSC2CT240A4)
•Intel® HD Graphics 5500 and 4K display capable
•2x Mini DisplayPort* 1.2, 1x eDP (2-lane with backlight and adjustable voltage/timings)
•Headphone/microphone jack on the front panel
•2x USB 3.0 ports on the back panel, 2x USB 3.0 ports on the front panel, 2x Internal USB 2.0 ports via header
•Internal support for M.2 Key Type B SSD card (22x42 or 22x80)
•Internal SATA3 support for 2.5¨ HDD/SSD (up to 9.5mm thickness) - a 2.5" SSD/HDD drive caddy is included - so 2 drives can be installed/used at the same time
•Intel® 10/100/1000Mbps Network Connection
•Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 802.11AC, 2 x 2 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapter
•Windows 10 Professional x64 (Activated)
•Dimensions : 115mm x 111mm x 48.7mm
•Power Adapter: 19V, 65W wall-mount AC/DC power adapter

My intention is to mount the NUC in a custom console along with a keyboard, the operator pendant and a 17" Dell/ELO panel mount touchscreen (model E170S). This is a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor. That will be compatible with the Centroid software, correct?

That NUC should work great. I think in the past you might have been looking at an overall CPU score rather than a Single Threaded Score. If Anti-Virus or Firewall was installed it can be un-installed via the Windows Control Panel. You can either use the built in wireless to network or use a USB to Ethernet adapter if you only have a wired network. A 4:3 aspect ratio is compatible with CNC11.
