DMM DYN4 Under CNC12 4.18

Post by martyscncgarage »

IF you are running Centroid 4.18, this might be helpful in setting up DYN4 drives with this version. DYN2 and DYN4 drives will have a separate radio button in 4.20

The issue CNC12 Version 4.18 is that there is one radio button for DYN2/DYN4 in the Wizard. DYN2 requires the user to use the DB25 and this turns ON using the DB25 instead of the headers needed for DYN4 and inverting the enable in the Wizard. Follow these steps:

1:) Selected DYN2/DYN4 Drive radio button in the Wizard
2:) Go into DB25 Signal Mapping and in the Step and Direction output, change from DB25 to SCREW TERMINAL
3:) Lastly, AXIS ADVANCED Tab and make sure the Enables are inverted.
4:) Write and Save the changes. Restart CNC 12

Then DYN4 should work as expected.

If you have issues, please post to the forum with Wizard Screen shots.
Again, this only pertains to CNC12 Version 4.18

I’ve switched to screw terminal in the wizard, and made Sure the axis enable buttons were inverted (check marks ON).

The moment I powered up my machine ALL the axis came to life on their own and they were slowly jogging down the rails but with incredibly violent shuddering and small back and forth movements. Everything was changing direction at once.

I thought maybe it was because DDM told me directly via phone to select the “enable active low” setting to ON in their drive software.
So I turned OFF the enable active low and it did the same. The violent shuddering didn’t stop until I placed the db25 signal mapping back to db25 (no screw terminal)

I am using the screw terminals on acorn

I have a rev3 acorn board with version 4.18 software.
I have dyn4 drives

Why does my wizard need db25 mapping on and why won’t it run right on screw terminal setting?

Not enough information. Post screen shots of your drive selection page, your advanced tab, your DB25 settings as well as screenshots of your DMMDRV page.
Also post a fresh report.
Did you buy the ACORN to DYN4 cables from DMM or did you make your own?

Not sure why DMM told you to check the ENABLE LOW in DMMDRV.

You might download the latest Beta software and give it a go. DYN2 and DYN4 have separate radio buttons.

This is my current setup.

The DYN4 software image is one of my Y axis. The other Y axis is set to the exact same parameters. My X and Z axis auto tuned just fine. I cant auto tune my dual motor Y axis drives so these are the numbers I've been working with.

My paired Y axis motors seem to fight each other until one faults, then its very smooth , silent motion for a few moments until that motor faults because it cant do the work of two motors(i assume?).

I am using the screw terminals on the acorn board. Also using All brand new DMM factory cables.

Your steps per revolution is wrong. You have 2000 setup for line number in DMMDRV.
You need to set steps per revolution to 8000 in Acorn Wizard.

After you correct this, you will have to redo your overall turns ratio.

You should not have been directed to check Enable Active Low.
Reload DMMDRV software, read from the drive.
UNCHECK Enable Active Low.
Write to the drive. (SAVE ALL)
POWER CYCLE THE DYN4 DRIVE after you make changes.
Power up the drive, reload DMMDRV, read from the drive and make sure the ENABLE ACTIVE LOW box is UNCHECKED.
You can't run autotune on an axis with 2 drives. DMM should have or be able to direction on what to do.
(If you disengage the slave axis from the rack, can the master axis move the gantry? If so, I might try and auto tune with one motor and then copy its parameters EXACTLY to the slave Drive and then reattach the motor/pinion to the axis)

I just did a quickie video showing all of this and DEMONSTRATING that the drive works. It will be ready in about 2 hours to view. You should see it here when ready.

I just made absolute sure that ALL my dyn4 drives have enable active low set to OFF (no check marks).

I made sure my steps per rev is now 8000 in acorn. I haven’t changed my turns ratio yet. Didn't think it was crucial yet, until the “mind of its own” movement stops.

I set the db25 mapping to screw terminal.

Saved, powered off, waited, powered on.

The machine begins to walk and shudder back and forth.

I go back into the wizard and go back to db25 mapping set to db25.

SAved, powered off, waited, powered on.

The machine comes to life on its own again.

So now I’ve noticed in my wizard, that no matter how many times I try to turn OFF the enable check boxes of the acorn advanced page, they won’t deselect. I can’t turn them off to save my life.

Is that a corrupt wizard install bug?

Try the new beta release software. DO recalculate your turns ratio.
Follow the instructions, take screen shots of ALL your current wizard screens and print them out.
Uninstall 4.18 and install 4.19 Beta, check the DYN4 radio button. You have ZERO to lose at this point.

Your drives should NOT enable and should NOT do a thing until CNC12 enables them. Clearly they are being enabled by default on power up.
Not sure why CNC12 V4.18 is not saving your settings

The video is taking a long time, it was at 95% and then all of a sudden it dropped to 25% grrrr.....
I also go over the wiring of the DMM cable to Acorn.

I'd like to see a picture of your control cabinet, showing DYN4 drives, Acorn and general wiring.
