How does a Stepper Motor Work? How to size the motor, power supply, and stepper motor connections

There is more to choosing a stepper motor than get the biggest you can fit on the machine.
If you are retrofitting a machine, try and find out the specs of the motor on the machine and start with its torque characteristics. The machine was engineered with that in mind to give it good designed performance.

Once you figure out the torque requirements, you have to figure out the power supply.

Geckodrive wrote a good paper on this:

A BRIEF GUIDE TO MOTOR THEORY AND DESIGN

For me, it was a game changer. I was more able to select the proper stepper motor for the machine based on torque requirements AND the proper power supply that would work best for that motor. I hope it helps some of you as well. It may make a world of difference on how your machine performs. Steppers work very well when properly sized and selected.
