No Heartbeat LED? DON'T BE SO QUICK TO DEBRICK!

Post by martyscncgarage »

If you find that that there is no power LED or hearbeat LED on your Beagle Bone Green(BBG). STOP!

Don't be so quick to assume that it has died!

Do some trouble shooting procedures first:
  • 1. Disconnect the ethernet cable from Acorn
    2. If you have removable headers (Acorn Hardware Revision 3) unplug ALL but the power connector
    3. Power up Acorn and see if the power led comes on and heartbeat returns.
    4. If it DOES, then power it down and plug the Ethernet cable back into BBG and retest. If heartbeat is present, try and start CNC12 to see if it comes up (communication established)
If heartbeat DOES NOT come up with everything disconnected from Acorn, but the power led on Acorn does, then proceed to the debricking procedure.
If your BBG is dead, then you may order a Beagle Bone Green from a supplier of your choice, and then perform the debricking procedure to load the Centroid firmware back on Beaglebone.

If you have an older Acorn hardware revision, take a picture of which terminal your wires go, mark the wires and disconnect them follow the procedure outlined above.

If the Acorn heartbeat comes on and then goes off as the PC boots, disconnecting the ethernet cable may help diagnose this.

Lastly, if no heartbeat, pull BBG off the Acorn mainboard and power it up via the mini USB port on BBG as if you were going to debrick it. Does it boot up and heartbeat LED come back? If so, could be an issue with the Acorn board.

Just don't be so quick to assume BBG has died without doing basic test procedures first. I have been through about a dozen+ Acorn builds and haven't had one go bad on me yet. But I have had the heartbeat not come on, and found it was something OTHER than BBG.

Debricking problem:

I bought a replacement BBG for one of my Acorn boards. I have a formatted Micro SD card 4G smallest one i could find. I downloaded and extracted the files but when i run the HP format program it does not see the SD Card. The two files are there but nothing when i try and run the program I am running as Administrator I tried the SD car with the two files in the BBG and it lights up one LED but the 4 led's in left side under the two buttons do nothing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Does your Windows PC recognize the the card when you insert it into the USB adapter and plug the usb adapter in to your PC?

Why did you have to replace the BBG?

Hi Marty. It may be a faulty USB adapter reader. I can read and write to the SD using a Micro SD to SD adapter. I can load the two files but the BBG does not appear to see the files. I ordered a replacement Reader and will have it tomorrow Got to love Amazon. As for the reason to replace the board I thought it was damaged by a loose wire so it was pulled off carefully placed in a Anti Static bag and never seen again lost to the black hole of my 6000 foot shop. No Doubt it will turn up Monday now that i have a replacement. I am wiring another router control hope to power up tomorrow.

The micro SD must be formatted with that utility....

Update on debricking.

New USB to SD holder did work. However the HP program had problems with the 8 Gig SD and all my SD card somehow cane up write protected, When using the HP program they were not write protected in other applications I could transfer files in and out. I was finally able to use regedit to remove the write protection off of the SD drives. It is removed by changing this setting Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorPort\StoragDevicePolicies
Once removed the program formatted the the SD drive and after loading the two programs I was able to debrick the BBG.

Still trying to get my Pro license to work with the new BBG but the Acorn is working
