Here is a just completed system that has been built to replace a ShopBot PRS alpha system with Centroid Acorn running Teknic ClearPath servomotors. A complete replacement of control box, motors, wires, including a Win10Pro computer , although a bit pricey with these servos, allows the user to sell his existing system and recoup around half the cost. Installation and tuning are available.
This system has over 3 times the torque and 3 times the resolution (~8488 steps/inch) that the originals use. Couple that with a controller that can allow rapid speeds ~1000ipm without a 5:1 reduction in resolution. Add in the stability of the Centroid control and it is a win, win, win scenario.
Here are a few pics that show the controller inside and out (preinstall) and a Teknic motor mounted to a planetary gearbox which in turn is mounted to an adapter plate which I mfgr. Pricing is a bit less (including the computer) than the OEM alpha upgrade. Installation and tuning are available.

Re: ShopBot Alpha Replacement System
This system has been installed and is operational. Hopefully, as the "proud new owner" puts it thru some real world cutting some post will be made showing that along with an extreme increase in reliability and operational function, the Centroid controller offers countless features that could only have been dreamed of when using the original controller.
I beleive that his testing will show that my estimated specs above were very conservative. In actuality, this system outperforms my estimations. Stand by......

Here's a link to the current state of the ShopBot Alpha/Centroid Upgrade:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/tT7aotEAc8zPMQwWA
As you will see, there are details that need to be worked through yet. Still have to install some limit switches, and need to make a new faceplate for the console cabinet to fit the new touchscreen monitor.
I was primarily motivated to make this upgrade because I was not able to resolve software glitches and communication errors with the ShopBot control system. I was more or less satisfied with the performance of the ShopBot system when it was working.
But - wow what a difference in controllers! With smoothing turned on in CNC12, and set at defaults for a "precision router", this system is sweet and smooth. Did I say smooth? It is SMOOTH! It engraves text more smoothly than I have ever seen this machine run before. The Clearpath servos are probably part of the improvement too but I think the biggest difference may well be the Centroid control software.
I have a lot to learn. G-code is new to me. But this upgrade feels solid. Thanks to Gary for his help with this project!
I'm planning on doing a set of better quality photos after I finish the control panel and the limit switch wiring.

Re: ShopBot Alpha Replacement System
Wow! Tip top execution. It's amazing how silent it is - it almost unbelievable compared to the Vextas with 'box of rocks' gearboxes on them.
Excellent work as always, Gary.
Gerald - I'd love to see some more video of this setup. Maybe do one jogging around and cutting sheet goods @ high speed?

More pics of this setup coming soon. I've been working on my control console. Here is a preview.

That's looking pretty awesome Gerald!
Needs a coin slot and an offline toggle to play some video games when not in use!

Re: ShopBot Alpha Replacement System
For those who may be considering a similar path with their ShopBot, here are some photos of the finished project. I'll be sharing high res images, and more of them, with Gary and Keith as well.
I can recommend Gary as a true pro that will support his product. And I couldn't be happier with Centroid's machine control.

Too clean.
Just kidding, the system and install looks great!
