Does this kind of wired MPG work with Acorn?

I'm looking at this because I would like to have two of them on the front panel of my lathe. I have room to install them, and it would be nice to have one for each axis, rather than a single wheel with a switch. I've been looking through the docs and haven't found where/how to wire up an MPG, let alone one like this. Is it possible? If so, where can I find the documentation on how to do that?

That one with 6 terminals (+5V, 0V, A, B, /A, /B) will work just fine but you would be sacrificing your encoder port that would be better used for the spindle. You would have to wire it to a DE9 connector to match the pinout of the one on the Acorn (P10). Details for that will be in the Acorn manual on page 131.

We are in the later developmental stages on a product that would allow you to connect up to 3 handwheels like those to your control. However, it will require the so called 4 terminal type. Those have terminals for +5V, 0V, A, and B connections.

Or, you can switch to an Acorn6 that has multiple encoder inputs.

ok thanks. so I'll hold off on this for now. I'm planning on putting in an encoder for the spindle so I can't sacrifice that. How does the product you're developing connect to the Acorn? Ultimately I'd like to have:

1) Spindle motor control (Teknic MCPV or MCVC, which I already have) with encoder
2) 2 axis closed loop steppers (StepperOnline CL57Y drivers)
3) 2 home switches (I'll set up soft limits)
4) 2 MPG wheels
5) 1 E-Stop
6) some things using the relays like cabinet lights

Am I going to be able to do all this with the Acorn (assuming whatever product you're developing handles the multiple MPG wheels)

Way out of my budget

a new product called USB-BOB is coming down the pipeline will allow many MPG's to be connected to the Acorn as well as many different types of operator console buttons.

Very cool. And that doesn't take away any of the normal in/out ports on the Acorn board?

That is correct. It will not take away any of the normal Acorn I/O ports. It is handled separately and gives you up to three MPG encoders along with 12 inputs for buttons and switches. It also comes with three small rotary encoders for control of feedrate, spindle, and rapid feedrate overrides.

Very cool. Any idea on when this will be available (even a ballpark idea?)

we are in beta test mode right now, will do that for about a month then it will be available on shopcentroidcnc.com for sale.
