We just ordered an Acorn CNC controller kit, and the diagram online implies that the Acorn CNC controller is connected to our computer via an ethernet cable. It is this document: https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... roller.pdf
Is this a direct connection between the Acorn CNC Controller and our computer with the ethernet cable, presumably a crossover cable?
Or is the Acorn CNC Controller just another computer that can be plugged into a nearby ethernet switch to be on the LAN?
Ethernet or Crossover Ethernet?

Re: Ethernet or Crossover Ethernet?
You will not need a crossover cable as most ports are auto sensing nowadays. The CNC12 computer is usually a dedicated computer located at the machine. The control computer and the Acorn are on a static network of 10.168.41.nnn.
If your control computer has dual NICs, you can connect the spare to your LAN. Most people do not recommend it though as the machine controller should be isolated from the Internet.

Re: Ethernet or Crossover Ethernet?
Of note, the Acorn kit comes with all of the necessary cables, including a shielded Ethernet cable.
Cheers,
Tom
