Very Small Tool Touch Off

Post by John Webb »

Can I use the Centroid TT-4 to touch off a 0.023" endmill without breaking it or must I do it manually?
Thanks,
John

I have no doubt you can, just be mindful of the plunge speeds. I dont own a TT-4 but another tool touch that's spring loaded like the TT-4 and I have touched off smaller bits on mine. Like those very small dental drill bits. My speed is 10 IPM on my z zero macro and I've never broken one.

Make sure you can send the TT-4 back if it doesn't work for you. It takes quite a bit of force to trip it (25 oz). So much that I initially thought it was locked when I got it. I haven't found it to be a problem with some of my smaller bits, but I haven't tried one that small.

Thanks so much guys!
Yeah a pound and a half might be too much spring.
I'll make sure its returnable.

the conductive TT-1 works nicely for small bits

What? A pound and a half to move the plunger? :o I never would have guessed that and mine is no where near that so forget everything I said.

Just a quick follow up. I took cnckieth’s advice and got the TT-1. I can say without a doubt that VERY small end mills can be set with the TT-1. I repeatedly set the length of a 0.010 endmill without breaking it! Interestingly, according to the manual the trigger pressure of the TT-4 is 25 oz nominal to center of disc. Which is less than the TT-1 at 5.75 lb. +/-20%. Go figure!
Anyhow, I’m very happy with my TT-1.
Thanks to everyone.

The TT-1 uses electricity to measure the tool :D and is not a mechanical switch
for the movement force of the TT-1 it is just a backup to not destroy the TT-1 with an overtravel, the TT-1 trips waaaay before any force like that is generated (unless you have bad conductivity such as oil, grease, dirt, dust, wood particle etc.. in the way.
glad you are measuring away!
post some photos! would love to see what you are doing.
