c axis stepper? or ac servo?

Post by drbris »

So i am planning on converting a manual lathe to cnc i have purchased acorn 6 and lathe pro. Not sure the 3 hp 3 phase motor running it now is vfd ready (20+ years old) so probably need to order a new 3 phase motor and vfd ?
Was thinking of using a hybrid stepper*(stepperonline model 34HE59 as I have 5 of these and was going to use them for the x and z axis ) So also for c axis? Or am I better off getting a large ac servo that can run in step and velocity mode somehow and skip the 3 phase motor and vfd? And how many kw servo motor and drive would be needed to have as much torque as the 3hp 3 phase motor? Any help would be appreciated.

Confidence is the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation.
I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.
