encoder and motors

So, my friend is asking me to build him a controller for an old lathe. I'm trying to save him as much as I can and use the exisitng parts as much as possible. His existing encoder is 5 wires, but all the Acorn encoders I've seen are 8 on a DB9. Is there a way to adapt? His motors are old powerpac Bipolars n31hlhj-lnk-ns-00, which I don't think should be an issue...but since I'm here.

That's the plan now. I was looking for a way to save a him a few hundred bucks. That being said, he already wasted 300 bucks on a 20 year old computer that would support an AHA card. His lathe has been down for a month now and it's part of his business, so I just need to get it back running for him...
