New setup help!

Post by remm »

Hello all,

Mike here, new to the Centroid community. (first post)

Firstly I want to thank all you you for the amazing work and contributions to this community.

I'm upgrading from an RnR motion controller and no name steppers/drivers.

I just received my Acorn V4 2 days ago and I am struggling to get movement from my steppers.

Hardware:
CX600 Milling machine (smaller table version of the G0704)
Double-Nut Ballscrews
Stepper Online 3N-m open loop steppers (i know, closed loop is better)
Stepper Online DM542T drivers
https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/1-axi ... 42t-23hs45

My research lead me to this schematic to use.
https://www.centroidcnc.com/dealersuppo ... 976.r4.pdf

Acorn communicates to PC on bench test. Steppers are powered by power supply.

No movement from the steppers using CNC12. Any thoughts on what to do?

How can I measure output from Acorn to see if pulse and direction signals are outputting? My multimeter probing didn't] give me any confidence anything was happening

See attached photos for reference.

Thank you for all your help! I appreciate all feedback!

Please post a current report from your Acorn so we can see all your current settings. Without a report we cannot help you at all, we'd simply be guessing at the issue. One thing I see is that it appears that you have your pulses/rev on the drive set at 800, it needs to be a MINIMUM of 1600. No less. This isn't the reason for no movement just an observation.

Post a current report and we can provide some input for you.

As Shawn states above, you have your drives p/r set to 800. Your report shows your Acorn config is set to 1600 which is where it should be BUT a mismatch with the drives. Before going any further, power off and reset each drive dip switches to 1600.

Have you connected a E-Stop in the wizard? I see several references to E-stop in the error Log but nothing appears connected in your photos

Other observations:
- Your screen resolution is set to 1440 x 900 whereas the recommendation is 1920 x 1080 for optimum clarity
- Other processes running when you created the Report include Edge, Chrome, AppleMobileDeviceService etc etc. Is this a dedicated PC for CNC use and have you run the Configuration Checker ?

To move forward it would help us to see your config if you could generate a PDF from the Wizard and post here - Go into wizard and from any page press "CTRL + P" simultaneously choosing "Microsoft Print to PDF". In case MP to pdf is not enabled on your PC then enable it first, of course
Hope this helps
Nigel

Thank you all for your responses.

Dip switches adjusted to 1600

I do not currently have an e-stop installed but will one day add e-stop, limit switches. I need to get this machine up and running for a fast job and can make do without for now.

Screen Resolution is max this monitor can handle. Its my garage monitor, If you think that is the cause I will certainly swap.

I completed all the windows mods with the configuration setting when doing the bench test.

The PC was formally a CAD/CAM station, now converting to only CNC work (some web browsing when not running apps)

Thank you all!

For those drives you need to set the "step rate" in the wizard on the "advanced axis configuration" page to 100,000. I have no doubt the manual for that drive says it can handle 200,000 but they lie. It may work sometimes at 200,000 but it will create problems.

Also, on that same wizard page, try checking the the boxes at the top of the page for "step" and "direction" for all three axis. Leave the enable box unchecked and see if you get movement.

You at least need an e-stop configured in case of an emergency. CNC machines are not toys and can seriously injure you if you are not careful. You can work without limit switches but you'll want those as well at some point.

Report back when you can.

Shawn and all,

Thanks for the quick replies.

I do agree an estop is necessary, I have one on the bench! I wanted to get the steppers working on the bench before adding more electronics.

No luck changing to 100000 or selecting or not selecting step/direction

When you power up the drives do the motors lock?

Yes, motors have power and are holding/locked.

Looks like these drives accept 5v or 24v logic via a switch. if it was me I would skip the DB25 and run them right off the acorn 24v outputs
