Post processor Acorn-Vcarve pro

Post by drewbrittain »

Hello everyone-Its been a few months since I first came to this forum to seek counsel on changing controls on a Gerber Sabre 408.

Update: I switched out controls to Acorn and retrofit some Clearpath SDSK motors. Everything works. I'm super happy, so far. However, I ran a test file I made in vcarve today and although it generated a g-code program and showed the tool path correctly in cnc12, the machine seemed to only move along the x-axis.

I didn't have time at shop to diagnose the issue today, but this is part of the Cnc build where I am the weakest. The mechanicals are no problem, but the software I'm less confident. I'm assuming its the post processor or possibly something not properly configured in cnc12.

Before I go too deep I thought I should ask the hive for some advice. All input is welcome. Thanks in advance

I only saw 3 options for post processor in vcarve
centroid mm
centroid inch
centroid arc ?** can't quite remember exactly what this was

I use CNC12 with VCarve Desktop and can confirm that "centroid mm" works fine.

I also use CNC12 with Vectric's Aspire (same PP as Vcarve) and with the Centroid Arc Inch PP.
Hope this helps

I seriously doubt this is a PP issue unless it's corrupt somehow. The inch and mm PP in Vcarve work right out of the box. If you've tried to modify it in any way then all bets are off. Post a current report when asking for help so we can see your current settings.

I am just posting so I can be notified of progress, i.e. as I use V-Carve too.

Well I solved the post processor issue. obviously user error. the problem was in vcarve. I failed to save post processor correctly when saving my tool path. but in all my tinkering with cnc12 I changed a few other settings, as I discovered new unrelated issues.
1 of new problem machine no longer autohomes to home switches.

I changed steps per revolution and overall turn ratio(distance traveled didn't match actual) I now know this was wrong move
I set soft limits and tried to let cnc12 Autohome again, but it doesn't look for home switches, it just homes machine wherever it is.

I saved a report but that's before I messed with anything. ill try again tomorrow

If you change the home file from what the wizard does, select you have custom home in the wizard. Otherwise anytime you go in the wizard to make a setting change, it will make another generic home file. Whatever it is told to do in the wizard, it will do.

Just part of the learning curve.

Make sure it actually moves the distance it thinks it went in all axis. After that is doing what you expect, work on the home file. You can modify it to home exactly on the corner of material, but if you do, select you have a custom home file so it won't get messed up.

The work coordinate system and tool library will need attention.

Then get your tool measurement working and you will be ready to try an air cut.

The fastest way forward is to restore from the most recent backup dated BEFORE you started making these erroneous changes. This assumes that the backup is the same CNC12 software version as have currently. Restore should NOT be used for different s/w versions, of course.

Before you start and just in case, suggest you make new backup of where you are now and a PDF of your current (erroneous) Wizard settings.
Hope this helps
