ok sounds like we are taking about probing and not digitizing :-))

sounds like you just need to locate these features relative to another point on the object. then you will know where to place the geometry in the cad model. this is pretty easy.

Won't the probe scan/digitize the object so I can converti it into a model and THEN modify/customize the new model?
I will still need to be able to model up the slide to mill the slots and text for engraving onto a rounded surface.

this is a HUGE subject with lots of different work flow paths. There are many ways to use both probing and digitizing to get part data into a cad/cam system in which then you can further modify and create new geometry and then eventually g code to machine it. there are many different techniques to this process and many depend on the geometry that you desire to copy/recreate. no one way/method is the answer for everyone.

It looks like to me some calipers and radius gages would get that into CAD much faster.
Cheers,

Tom
Confidence is the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation.
I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

I'm sure you're right bit thats not the point. This is a $700 tool and it has many more jobs to do and I need to learn how to use it to its fullest.

Also, I'm getting jobs in where I'll be machining some SKS 7.62 slides to accept a magazine when closed. I will need to us the probe to scan the bolt so I can save a model as aprogram to modify it as needed to accept those magazines. My thoiughts are that after I get through some growing pains (learning curce) I can get this tool to probe or make scansof the parts while I'm working on other guns. Doing my part to save the Country! :D
