Touch probe

Post by Terry1956 »

Hi chaps, may I ask what probe or edge finder you use out there. I would like one that connects to the acorn board, but the centroid probe price is just too rich for my blood. So what other items work. Thanks.

Pretty much anything will work as long as it meets the requirements outlined in this document: https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... _setup.pdf

It needs to be updated to include the KP-3 / simple mechanical style but it gives a great rundown of what you need and how to configure it.

IMHO after using some cheap probes, KP3 is the best value for the money.

No 150 buck probe is as easy to connect or as precise and reliable.

Re: Touch probe wiring install...HELP!

Post by cdiseker »

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum.
I'm trying to wire my KP3 probe to the board and looking at the schematic it shows how the red wire goes to IN6 and the white wire goes to IN7.

My challenge is this, when I had the unit set up the guy has a wire already connected into the IN6 place.

The wire connected in this spot is for limit switches. Can I use a different space for the touch probe or do I need to move the limit switch wire? And then, where would I move the limit switch wire to and ensure it works correctly? Thanks in advance, my machine is down and I'm behind on customer projects.

Hello,

You can put that wire for the KP-3 in any unused H1 or H4 input. If you have a relatively recent version of CNC12 then you should be able to set that easily in the Wizard.

You can access the Wizard by starting up CNC12 and pressing F7 Utility then F10 Acorn Wizard.
Follow the instructions on page 19 of the following document to assign that new input to the correct probe signal. There are also instructions for telling CNC12 how the probe will behave on that page.

Please post a report from the control so we can see how it is currently configured. You can find a guide to that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecvg0VJp1oQ

kp-3 manual is the better manual to use when installing a KP-3, the probe manual is a general purpose probe seutp guide, where the KP-3 is specific to the KP-3 :-)
https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... _probe.pdf
and yes you can use the Wizard to use any available input for the kp-3 , the acorn inputs are definable not fixed. so just because the wiring diagram shows it being wired to a specific input doesn't mean that it HAS to be on that input. :-)

Is there a source to learn how to use the KP-3 Touch Probe to digitze a part? I need to make a 3d model then mill some slots and engrave on it.

the digitizing routines built into cnc12 are covered in the CNC12 Mill operators manual.

while they are very easy to use, the digitizing to cutting a part learning curve can be steep.

post a photo of what you intend to digitize.

Thanks for the reply. For some reason it just now popped in my feed (bad internet I bet).

I need to start making a library of models to use on custom jobs.

Anyway, Want to digitize the slide on a Sig pistol so I can engrave onto the top radius with a small ball mill.

Another job will be to mill angled slots into a 1911 slide.

I can model the slides in Fusion no problem, but I invested in the probes and I'd like to start using it. I bought it thinking it would just save me a bunch of time on finding x,x,z. But I now know it will make coffee too! WOW!
