Adding a tool height pad
I own a simple tool height pad that has a normally closed switch inside. My configuration is "Legacy". I connected +24V to H1 24IN, IN6 to one wire of my pad. The other wire connects to COM on H2. The voltage between these wires is 0.065V. When I push down on the pad, the voltage rises to +24V.
I set up to find my Z ref. After pressing F3 and then cycle start, the tool came down, pressed on the pad more than it needed to, retracted, and repeated. It only stopped going up and down when I hit ESC.
With a lot of guessing, I set these parameters:
Param value
155 1
44 6 (super wild guess but other numbers I tried causes errors)
11 -6
12 10
13 .25 (it pushed the pad down so much that I needed to have the probe back up this much)
14 0.1 (so fast probing rate set very slow; didn't seem to go this slow)
15 0.01 (slow probe rate super slow yet seems to go much faster than this)
16, 17 took defaults
So much for guessing. How do I get this to work?

check out the centroid probe manual.. it goes over all the parameter settings for tool touch off and probes for part zero and digitizing.

One thing I don't see is which input port should be used for my tool touch off device.
I used the CNC11 SAE parameters for TT and now get the message "Error during probing cycle". I am physically connect to IN6.

Do you have 24vdc to 24vdc IN on the input terminal block Rick?

My probe is connected to IN7 on the Acorn carrier board. The tool setting probe is open circuit until the tool tip touches it, grounding IN7.
Settings are:
P13 = 0.05000 - Probing Recovery Distance
P14 = 3.00000 - Fast Probing Rate
P15 = 1.00000 - Slow Probing Rate
P16 = 10.00000 - Probing Search Distance
P155 = 0.00000 - Probe Settings : Standard Probe = 0, DSP Probe = 1, DP7 Probe = 2
I believe I am setting the feed rate around 30% and have no messed with the above settings. I should set the probing speeds down so I can leave the feed rate at 100%
With the eclipse chase, being in Iowa for a week and the prep time prior to leaving I have not had time until now to play with the settings.

Rick please follow the Acorn Probe schematic for Probe input location. the PLC input is preprogrammed so if you hook up the probe according to the Acorn schematic it will be correct. -K

Keith, thanks for clarifying this. So the probe input isn't user selectable? It must be the input per the schematic correct? Just clarifying. I may have made a bad assumption.

yes any inputs on acorn can be used for anything and are completely user configurable for a wide variety of uses.... the stock Acorn PLC program is setup and pre-configured to the matching Acorn schematics use the Radio buttons in the Centroid CNC control configuration Wizard to preconfigure your Acorn CNC12 PLC and parameter settings and simply wire the probe according to the schematic and it works.
In the rare case when stock probe input (input 7) is forced to be used for something else other than the Probe Trigger Input due to other rare connections that might require input 7 to be used for something else.. what you can do is simply use the Centroid CNC setup wizard to customize the Acorn input configuration and change the Tool Probe input to another free input on the Acorn board and the wizard takes care of the parameter settings and the PLC program for you! so no need to go into the cnc12 parameters or learn anything about PLC programming!, use the Wizard to do the work for you and the probe will automatically be setup and running..then you simply adjust the fast and slow values to your liking as beevo mentioned above..setting up a probe couldn't be easier. in the image below i show how its easy to use the drop down boxes and i changed the input 7 to 5 for the probe input as an example of how to change the location of the probe input. be sure to click "write setting to cnc control configuration" for the changes to take effect. BUT, i recommend using the stock probe input (#7 is probe trigger . and Input #6 is optional probe detect which detects whether or not the probe is plugged in and being used which prevents the spindle from turning on and jogging into the probe upon an unexpected contact with probe see schematic attached.) and the supplied Acorn Probe connection Schematics if you have no real reason not to! otherwise you might just be shooting yourself in the foot.
