Acorn 6 Linear Scale Specs
I'm converting my manual Mill to CNC I'm trying to decide between the acorn 4 and the acorn 6th the main reason for the acorn 6th is the three ports it has for linear scales I already have decent linear scales fitted to my Mill so if I can use those in conjunction with the CNC control board I'll go with the acorn 6 but I don't want to spend the extra money scales are not compatible with the acorn 6 so my question is what are the specifications for linear scales to work with the acorn 6 and is it worth it to try and get a closed loop system this way

5V Differential (RS422) incremental quadrature. It's doable, but depending on the resolution of your scales, you may find the dither unacceptable. I've used Acu-Rite SENC 150 and SENC 50, Fagor MM, and MSA 170 scales in the past. You'll have the wire the DE9 connector as you will not find any scales factory wired with the Centroid pinout.
Cheers,
Tom

Re: Acorn 6 Linear Scale Specs
I've taken my logic analyzer and figured out the pin out to convert scales from one to the other. So with the Acorn6 on a lathe, I could use the glass scales for feedback? Are there any gotchas for doing this? Will it automatically compensate for ballscrews error or will it error out instead?

Re: Acorn 6 Linear Scale Specs
so my scales are rs422 but 5um not 1um is that a dealbreaker? also is it even worth the extra money for a hobby machine i dont need crazy tolerances i just hate to see the money and time that went into the dro wasted is there a way to get all three scales to work with the acorn4 ? thankstblough wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2023 8:12 am 5V Differential (RS422) incremental quadrature. Re: Acorn 6 Linear Scale Specs
Scales will not work with Acorn4. Only one encoder port; I guess you could put a scale on one axis if you weren't using a spindle encoder.
