Spindle encoder issues continuation

Post by mcbr549 »

I'm at a loss....
So, going back several months, I had a lathe that quit threading, rather started splitting leads. I verified that everything mechanically was in order, about 4 times actually. So, I decided to convert a larger South Bend lathe to cnc and simply get away from the Grizzly G9972Z altogether. It was a project that I wanted to do anyway. I did a complete conversion, new, larger ball screws and nuts, new steppers (NEMA34 on the Z). All new bearings.

Since it was a weekend, I did not have a lathePro license for the new board, so I installed the old board to get the machine running. With everything set, I sized a part and tried to cut the thread....to my absolute disgust, same issue as on the other machine. Board 3333

I have been using cheaper CALT encoders so I bought a new Koyo. wired it up, double checked it, plugged it in to the board....nothing, except a + appears by the spindle readout.

What to do? Since my mill is setting next to the lathe, I simply plugged the encoder into the mill....It works!!!! Board 4949

Not completely satisfied, I put a new board into the lathe, plugged in the encoder,,,,It works!! Board 7056

I had just purchased 5 new boards and took the time to plug each on in and try the encoder...they all work!

Plugged it back into the older board.....Yes, you guessed it...nothing.

After all this, i'm guessing the original board in the Grizzly lathe Board 3333 is bad

I've attached the reports from all three boards. I did not take pictures since the encoders work on every other board

I guess I'm looking for a consensus, or something.

By the way, the encoders were all mounted one to one with the spindle, rigid mounted.

Mike

One last question, since it is a weekend, is there any way to thread without the Lathepro license? I will purchase one immediately but I need it this weekend..

You need the pro license for thread turning.
