Free(ish) computers to run CNCPC?

Any interest in this stack of Dell Optiplex 790s?

Intel core i3 – 2120 @ 3.3ghz with 4gb of ram. NO HARD DRIVE. They're running windows 10 (enterprise) right now but I'm going to have to pull all drives and give them the ol' 9mm drive wipe.

They do have a windows 7 key code sticker, so I'm not sure if that can be used to get an upgrade to win10 at this point. I can look around at work and see if maybe we have something that can be used.

If only a few people are interested I can pull ram from half of them and move it to the other half.

Price is whatever it costs to ship. I think they'll fit in a large flat rate box. Or you can pick up if you're near Raleigh NC. Obviously I'm not making money here, just trying to help the community if they can be used, but otherwise they'll go to the dump.

If no one takes them please be sure you recycle these and not take them to the dump. There are several e-recycle places all over Raleigh that will recycle these.

Eh, looks like you can get a similar unit with a HDD and win10 for $73 shipped on Amazon...probably not worth it to even pay shipping on one of these.

I'll leave this up just in case someone else has a random box full of HDDs with win10 on them. 🤣

The dump in Holly springs has a recycling spot for electronics. I'm pretty sure Wake county contracts that out to a firm that melts all the gold out of the traces in exchange for hauling away the rest. Hopefully they recycle the plastic, etc.

According to the Passmark benchmark, that processors single thread score is too low for CNC12 use, but they might be okay for a general purpose pc.

Most do just that. There's a recycler right here in Clearwater that I use that breaks the entire computer down and they have dumpsters at their facility for each material. Metal, plastics, wire and circuit boards.

And Scott is correct, the single thread benchmark rating for that CPU is 1514 which is at the minimum for a CNC pc. I buy refurbished PC's with a 1900-2100 single thread rating for $125 locally with a HD and Win10 Pro installed.

It was a nice gesture though.

Yeah I hate to see anything useful go to waste. We just upgraded a training room to our modern computers (I work for a bank) and we'll be upgrading another soon, so I'll probably have another 12 here soon. Not worth it if they're at the edge of usable though.

Nice! I might pick one of those up. I was hoping to cobble together something for myself from the scrap pile at work, but unfortunately my options are some rack mount servers or these ancient Optiplex machines. Maybe we'll retire some of the older HP elitedesk 800s before I have to pull the trigger on buying something.

I use a lot of the 1L HP ProDesk 600 and EliteDesk 800 mini computers, the G3 or higher machines make great CNC pc's and they are very inexpensive to buy on eBay or CL. I love the NVMe slots for a crazy fast SSD. Plug in a wireless mouse and keyboard and you're off.
