Spindle encoder error

Post by terrymcc »

I did a MillTurn upgrade in 2021 to the the Centroid package and it has worked great and been very reliable. I needed to make a quick part last night and the milling spindle has an encoder error. It has been over 2 years since I've had to be in the guts of it and I am old so really had to scratch my head on how it works. Basically, when I turn the spindle on, it rotates a partial rotation and has the error. I checked obvious wiring... when I turn the spindle by hand, it reads RPM so it is getting a signal but I don't know if it uses all 4 encoder outputs or not. Direction of rotation works OK as well. On the Alt I screen, it doesn't show the encoder status so I can't tell if the signals are valid. I went into the setup wizard and turned off rigid tapping and spindle encoder so I could make the part.

Any thoughts on what it might be or how I can isolate the issue?

Thanks for any help.

what is the exact error message?
post a fresh report.zip so we can see your setup and error log.

In order to recreate the issues, I opened the wizard and enabled the spindle encoder and ridged tapping. I saved it and restarted CNC12. I ran a program and it didn't throw the error. However, I don't think it is really using the encoder because when I turn or run the spindle, the RPM display now stays on zero. I checked the encoder settings a couple of times but I don't think it is really in that mode. I can't think of anything else I did last night to disable the encoder get it running. Ugh, it's been too long since I was in the guts of this thing. The error was Spindle encoder fault or error. Attached is a current report.

Thanks for any help....

Your error log is showing quadrature errors:

Can you tell from looking at the log if a setting is keeping it from displaying RPM now? I re-enabled encoder and ridged tapping but the rpm reading didn’t come back on.

It's not displaying rpm because your encoder is not working. Go to the PID page in Setup and see if the ABS Post value is changing when you rotate the spindle by hand. Also check to see if an * appears next to the axis label (probably the sixth one down labeled N) once per revolution.
Cheers,
