AVID CNC PRO4896 Build

Post by soldier1968 »

Good day fellow forum members. I'm starting this thread to log the build of my AVID CNC PRO4896 machine with a custom control including an Acorn CNC controller, Teknic Clearpath SDSK servos and a C86ACCP board. I'm relatively new to the Centroid Acorn system and have enjoyed reading through the many threads on Acorn topics. I'm currently finalizing the wiring of the Acorn CNC controller and have a couple questions regarding sensor connections. My AVID machine has 5 NPN NO sensors. Z axis x1, X axis x1, Y axis x2, and Y Slave x1. All the documentation I've found so far only shows 4 sensors wired in parallel for the Homeall function. I'm looking for help on how to wire the 5th sensor (third Y Axis sensor) and how to configure it in Acorn. I’m sure this has already been done but cannot find any documentation with this configuration. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My build Specs:
 AVID CNC PRO4896 machine only
 Acorn CNC Controller
 C86ACCP
 CPM-SDSK-3421S-ELS ClearPath Integrated Servo Motor x4
 IPC-5 350/500 Watt DC Power Supply
 Power4 Hub
 Meanwell 24VDC Power Supply (power4 hub)
 Meanwell 24VDC Power Supply (Acorn & C86ACCP)
 Meanwell 24VDC Power Supply (Contactor coil supply)
 Meanwell 12VDC Power Supply (case fans)
 NPN NO Proximity Sensors x5
 WEG Contactor with 24VDC coil with snubber (E-Stop circuit)
 E-Stop station – DPST NC
 AVID CNC Tool touch-off
 Solid state relays x2 (dust collection and router)

Hello!

one option is: you can run the NO switches in parallel to one input called HomeAll
and use the SlavedHomeInput for the 4th autosquaring switch. explained here on page 13 https://www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_di ... _guide.pdf
found on this page.

you say you have 5, what is the 5th used for? rotary axis?

since you have clearpath you may be interested in this as well.

If you get your homing correct and set your travel limits properly, you will not need the +travel limit sensor. Mostly for open loop stepperrs

AND connect the drive fault signal from the Clearpaths to the Acorn.
Cheers,

Good day cnckeith, Gary and tblough. Thank you for the very fast responses and links! Like Gary mentioned above, the 5th sensor is for the Y2+ limit sensor. I wasn't sure if it was required with the Clearpath servos and Acorn controller. See photo in my build album for the sensor layout which i took directly from the AVID CNC instruction manual. Considering AVID designed their electronics and sensors for stepper motors will I need it for servos and an Acorn?

The sensor wiring should be straight forward if I only need 4 of them. I just need to figure out if the 5th sensor is actually required for my setup.

Here is the link to my photo album.

Thanks again

I wired my Y+ limit switch and set it up in the Wizard. No harm, just an added safety margin.
