I often have both with TopCom and TP06 >0,1mm run out after some use, that is not ok for me. So if I need a precision position, first check run out and readjust.

KP3 dialed in 0,005mm stays in my use almost forever 0,005 so I can use it and trust the measured position.

That's what I really am measuring, the center of the cutout in the instrument panel. So far, and again, for what I'm doing the TP06C is more than accurate for my work. I dont use the probe in the same way you or others do so if the center of the hole is off by .004" I'm OK with that as I'm not machining or doing anything with the hole other than locating the center.

I use the probe to digitize the OEM instrument panel and all its holes so I can have a CAD model of it.

Topcom now makes a new version for measuring tools, have a look if you haven't seen it yet.

For instrument panels all probes are ok, even topcom with piercings balls (0,015mm out of round of my tip) ;)

That was the first thing I changed, Zeiss Ruby Tip with carbide stem.

In my case I often have to do bearings bores on two sides with unter 0,01mm deviation, before KP 3 I always needed to do fine adjustment with a dial gauge.

I also tune probes with TripMap finding out best setting for my mill and best position for the probe, always mount the probe with dedicated SK 30 in the same position on the spindle.

So for my needs KP3 ist worth the price tag, because it delivers reliable results for the tolerances I need.

The main advantage of topcom and TP05/6 is the low height, KP 3 is a relative long probe.

Uwe,

Here's how I shortened the TT4/KP3 attachment on my mill, perhaps it will help you:

Confidence is the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation.
I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are where they should be.

Yeah, that inspired my to do a similar less radical holder....

cool, great discussion.
KP-3 is narrow and long for a number of reasons. good for getting down in holes, but i can see it as disadvantage for diy machines with short Z travels.
nice work on the short tool holders.
maybe we should consider a KP-3SB
SB for Short Body for DIY market.
