Digitization

Post by grossmsj »

Is there any documentation for the Digitizing Bundle? I've looked everywhere I can think of and haven't found anything.

For example, if I do a grid scan I understand there is a .dig file created. How do I view that scan? What sort of format is this scan so I can load it into something like Vectric Aspire?

.dig files are point clouds, you can generate a g-code file with CNC12 from this.

To make the point cloud a 3D object you need a CAD that can import point clouds an calculate a 3D Object from it.

A freeware you can use is meshlab.

thanks Uwe!

and i'll add, you can backplot .dig files with CNC12. they are g code files. there is an example .dig file included with the CNC installer called 20r.dig, it is a radial digitize run of a cylinder head combustion chamber. .dig files can be converted to .txt files which are points in space with the DIG to CAD button in the Digitizing menu of CNC12, at that point you use a cad/cam system to manipulate the data for your purpose.

If I select the 20r.dig file under DIG to CAD and hit F10 'accept', what should I be looking for as an output? Is there a text file somewhere?

cnc12 asks you where to save it.. so look there. if you choose "save in current location" that would be in the ncfiles directory. look for 20r.txt

I'm not getting that. I highlight the file 20r.dig, hit F10, and it just returns me to the previous screen.
Something doesn't feel right about this. I don't have any graphics of what has been scanned. I'll follow up tomorrow.

enter Digitizing menu press F9

enter Dig to Cad menu press F6

use the arrow keys to move the cursor to highlight 20r.dig,

PRESS THE SPACE BAR to select the file for conversion. (an asterisks will appear beside the file name like this. *20.dig)

Now press F10 Accept and CNC12 will ask you where to save the new .txt file, just press Y for yes and it will save it in the cncm\ncfiles directory.

use windows to navigate to cncm\ncfiles look for 20r.txt and open it with notepad ++ to see the points in the text file or import it into Rhino (what i do)

Okay, I've got this working on the Acorn side of things now. I get a nice x,y,z text file.
I'd like to get my hands on the Import Digitized Profile gadget for Aspire that Gary Campbell shows in his video.
Thanks for the help, all!
