New Build: Axiom AR6 ProV5 to Acorn

Post by grossmsj »

I received the Acorn board today, with NUC and monitor to follow shortly.

I love the Axiom AR6. It has been very dependable and does really good work. Not so crazy about the limitations that come along with the RichAuto motion control system. The Acorn will allow me to get more out of the laser (PWM), rotary 4th axis, and escape the tyranny of the goofy Siemens VFD user interface (get on your knees and twiddle the knob to change spindle speeds). That's all good.

Downside is that this upgrade is deep water for me, like just below the nose. As I go through all the information over and over again, it certainly feels achievable. Except the Siemens Sinamic V20 VFD. Right now, I don't have a clue how I'm supposed to wire that. It'll be a little while until I have to deal with it, but I would greatly appreciate any instructions on how to wire the VFD to the Acorn. Pertinent information from the Siemens manual is on pages 39-45.

This should be interesting.

I started to work on this today. Stripped out the RichAuto A1x Motion control system and took lots of photos. This is a closeup of the user terminals on the Siemens V20 inverter

From the Siemens manual, I understand that tying DI2 to 24V sets a spindle run forward condition. On this machine the spindle speed can only be controlled at the VFD. If I'm always going to run the spindle forward, do I need to wire these terminals to the Acorn, or just leave them as they are here?
Going forward, I'll be controlling spindle speed by sending H8 AN GND and AN OUT to VFD terminal 5 (0V) and terminal 2 AI2 (single ended unipolar current and voltage mode). Is this correct?

I don't understand how reset VFD will be controlled. The wires marked '3', X8 and 2 seem to be a switched output but i don't know their function yet.

It is going to be very tight getting all the Acorn stuff in the control box. I'll bring the Acorn board up with standoff feet and will have to rearrange the four VDC power supplies, DB25 breakout board and the output relay modules.

After rising the Acorn board, you can rise another level and create a platform for the relay board.

Great idea! I was wondering where that would go.

Any reason I shouldn't put the Meanwell unit outside the control box? I could use the space.
I'm thinking I'd put it on the outside back.

A little harder to get to the terminals afterwards, but they can be mounted on edge as well.

OMG! This is awesome! Thank you so much. As I get to wiring the spindle I might have a question, but this is so helpful. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Thanks again,
