CNC wood lathe upgrade

Post by andrewsww »

Hello Everyone.
I recently purchased a CNC Wood Lathe and am considering upgrading the software.
The machine came with (4) stepper motors. They are: X axis, Y axis, Z axis and A axis.
The X and Y axis control the O.D. turning tool.
The X and Z axis control the I.D. turning tool. (Boring Bar)
And the A axis is the motorized Tailstock.

Would the upgrade allow me to control the A axis as a drill allowing pecking or live center?

On the other hand, if by "like this" you mean a lathe that has a separate stepper/servo motor for every tool, the answer is probably no.

You can no doubt retrofit that machine with a Centroid control, and you can program it to do anything you want via CNC G codes.

However, many of the built-in features that make the control user friendly and convenient are premised on having one Z axis and one X axis, the two of which move all of the tools. On a standard CNC horizontal lathe, the Z axis moves the carriage left and right along the bed (axial movement); and the X axis moves the cross slide in and out (radial movement).

Like this does mean all 4 axis involved.
