G540 home switch question
The G540 has inputs for home/limit switches. If I'm using a G540 via. the DB25 connector, can the switches be connected to the G540 inputs, or do they need to be connected directly to the Acorn board? Or is it 6 of one, half-dozen of the other? Currently I'm not using any home or limit switches on my CNC router, but if I switch over to a different machine with home switches, this answer will largely determine how I physically mount the G540.

Re: G540 home switch question
Which G540 wiring diagram did you follow? Was this information not on that diagram?

Re: G540 home switch question
Use the G540 as drives only and make your I/O connections to the Acorn

Re: G540 home switch question
Shaw: It's unclear on the wiring diagram whether or not the DB25 connector will handle all available I/O's from the G540. While it certainly handles the drives, it doesn't state or show anything regarding other I/O functions.
So the question remains: does the Acorn recognize all available I/O's from the G540?
Gary, thanks for the input. Is that answer based on actual capabilities of the Acorn's DB25 connector, or your perceived "best way" to handle the connections?

Re: G540 home switch question
Why connect Inputs to G540 and then to Acorn, even if it's possible, it adds just one more source for faults and probably increase reaction time...

Re: G540 home switch question
The home and limit inputs are NOT on the DB25, look at diagram S14979. There are 8 dedicated inputs on the Acorn. This is in the users manual. As Gary stated, wire the G540 in “drive only” mode and make all your inputs on Acorn.

Re: G540 home switch question
1) The possible latency, added complexity and running a low current signal thru unneeded componentsGary, thanks for the input. Is that answer based on actual capabilities of the Acorn's DB25 connector, or your perceived "best way" to handle the connections?
2) G540 (DB25) has half the inputs
The perceived best way would be to use individual drives with higher current capabilities and wire terminals

Re: G540 home switch question
As Gary pointed out, the G540 is a very limiting drive when it comes to voltage and current. If you are building a small machine then it will work ok. If you need any real power or torque the G540 is not the way to go. There are far better options for about the same money.
That said, wire any inputs you need direct to the Acorn per the diagram I mentioned, not the G540.
