Motor noise

Post by jerryk »

My motors make a ringing noise if I give a G01 command after they finish the move. They don't do it with a G00 command. What am I doing wrong?
I have a video of it but it's too large to attach here.

Do you have servos or steppers?

hello.
please post videos and photos on a online photo album (such as google photos, for free) and then post the link here.
and we need much more info about the machine system to comment. see https://centroidcncforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=1043

G00 moves are usually rapid jogs to position the cutter. G01 moves are usually much slower. Stepper motors "sing" at various speeds. Servo motors "dither" to hold position. Noise can be a common occurrence depending on the speed and the load.

Trying to figure out how to post video. Hopefully the link above works. The stepper motors make the sound after the move is over.

The servo is not tuned right, or the machine is set to tight so the motor can not reach the position completely.

That might just be the driver sending a holding current after the move. I can't see for certain but that looks like an open loop stepper, so it doesn't have the means of telling if the axis is out of position.

Stepper drivers generally regulate the phase current at a low level once it has finished moving, rather than leave the winding connected directly across the power supply (which would cause it to overheat). This is done by chopping the voltage and this may be what you are hearing.

I haven't used a stepper driver for a while but IIRC on some drives it may be possible to change the holding current level by means of the DIP switch settings? If so, you may be able to reduce the sound level. On a fancy driver you may even be able to change the switching frequency. This one sounds like a few kilohertz.
