Random clearpath drive faults while operating

Post by bphillip2 »

I am currently using a new acorn board with ether16 expantion, teknic sksd motors and a c86accp expantion board to run our drive system. Our spindle is driven by a hitachi Wj200 and a CNC depot S 30 c. Using two power supplies, one for imputs on the acorn and acorn itself, another for ether16 and outputs. Also using proper quenarc (sp) and relay supplied surge suppressors. I'm experiencing random drive faults at various places throught most all programs. The most recent fault was a Z axis during a table mill program. I rewired all the electronics to improve the system as i occasionally had issues before. Now it is worse than ever.

check: is the drive actually in fault mode when you get the message in CNC12?

since you have Ether1616 you don't need the c86 board since you can individually run the driveok signals into their own inputs.

then you would also know which drive is faulting since all the drive ok signal would not be joined together as one.

and not related to your issue, but please update to v4.80 so we all are using the same software :-)

I had similar issues, with the same setup (clearpath, c86 board).
I ended up rewiring according to Gary's suggestion:
- don't use Acorn enable on the c86 (leave the jumper wire to always enabled)
- set the axis jumpers on the c86 to hard enable.
Essentially your motors are always enabled as long as they have power.

I didn't get any drive errors after this (had plenty, random before this).

Perhaps worth testing on your setup, as it's a fairly minor adjustment.

Hello. I am not a c86 fan at this point, so I re-wired as per Keith. I'm stuck though, I triple checked all wiring as per diagram(S14972.r6.pdf) and reduced to one axis and cannot get an enable light at H2 or H3. Checking voltage across ENB2 to 5V supply I get 0V, so the board is not pulling down and LED is red.
I don't have HLFB setup on eth16 atm, so there is no drive OK signal. I setup a dummy "Drive OK", no luck there either. Also setup eth16 driveok 1-4, no luck there either.
The estop on input 8 and green
What simple step have I missed?

It would appear the drive enable issue wasn’t a problem after all. The behavior is simply different now with direct wired setup than with the C 86 board. Whenever I started the machine over the last few years using the C 86 the drives were always enabled. In this case, they only enable once you command a movement of each individual axis. Until then the motors all show solid yellow.

I’m not sure why the log shows a problem with the Y plus limit switch. The machine is parked some 70 inches away from that switch. I’ll keep an eye on it, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue at the moment.

The good news is, I was able to run all the programs that I’ve been having difficulties with, and at 200% without any issues whatsoever. This is an improvement over the past year of running. Time will tell but looks like a great improvement to me.

Had I been aware I would’ve bought the new acorn six instead of a new acorn four and ether16 .
I greatly appreciate the assistance and prompt replies.
