Retrofitting an Emco PC Turn 55 with Acorn

Post by Hugo Turn »

I will tell you about the Emco PC Turn 55 retrofit project in this thread.
The lathe was in very good condition.
I changed the keep plates because the original ones, which are made of plastic, were broken. I made the new ones with an anti-friction plastic from Igus.

I also changed the spindle bearings.

The original Emco PC Turn 55 electronics were placed inside a huge red box behind the turn. I decided to place the new electronics inside the lathe housing.
I made some aluminum bases to mount the electrical panels, one for the power supplies and VFD, and another for the closed loop drivers and the Acorn control.

To place the encoder I made an adjustable bracket. I cut a 5mm aluminum sheet with the milling machine and turned two support cylinders.

nice work thanks for posting. consider putting all photos into a online photo album so all are in one place with one link to them all in hi res etc..

I just created the project photo album, where there are more photos than those published and with better quality:

I leave you a video of one of the first machining tests I did. Very good results, and the Intercon conversational system is very interesting, it saves a lot of time.

But there is one thing that doesn't work for me, the spindle speed variations, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
At first I thought that the CSS was not activated, that it only worked at the assigned speed, but then I understood that the spindle rotates at 2000rpm regardless of the spin speed defined in the cycle.
The maximum spindle speed is 4000rpm.
IMG_5492.jpg
This is one of the cycles:
IMG_5541.jpg
The PID menu once the cycle is finished looks like this:
IMG_5544.jpg
IMG_5545.jpg
The speed at which the spindle always rotates when executing a program, 2000rpm is equivalent to the speed at which the spindle rotates in the "MANUAL" position when the "100%" key is pressed, (it is actually 50%, for that the maximum speed of 4000rpm can be reached by pressing the "+" key)
IMG_5546.jpg
If I execute a line of G code with "F3 MDI", "M3 Sxxxx" the spindle adjusts to the programmed speed correctly in the whole range of configured speeds (500-->4000rpm)

Where is the problem?

By default in Intercon Setup max. CSS is set to 2000rpm.

If you set 2000 m/min CSS in Intercon for 22mm, the spindle will run complete at 2000rpm limit, because this would be 28937,3 rpm

When facing with a 0,4mm radius on the insert, set End Diameter to -0,5mm

Solved, now it works correctly!
I had not correctly understood the values and units with which the CSS had to be defined.

Thanks for the quick response, now I can sleep peacefully :D
