IPGregory - QueenAnt Pro V2 Build Thread

Post by IPGregory »

HI, first post!

Reading the board its suggested that we maintain a build thread to keep details of our build(s) and any questions, etc. in one place, so this is mine. I'm fairly new to the CNC world. Started with a Genmitsu 3018 as a practice/learning machine and many evenings deep in the 'Learn Fusion 360' YouTube rabbit hole. As expected, I recently came to the point where the 3018 was too small for what I want to do and it's time for a bigger more capable machine. Hence why I am here and the build thread.

My use for a CNC machine is a Table Router to cut primarily Acrylic and planning for infrequent soft metals. Aluminum primarily but maybe some brass and Copper occasionally. I tinker with computers as a hobby. The CNC is for making custom computer parts out of acrylic and occasional aluminum. Also, occasional smaller home projects in wood and so on.

After much research and too much back and forth I selected the QueenAnt Pro V2 machine from Yuyong Industry in 1010 size as best suiting my needs at the moment. https://yuyongindustry.com/product/5075 ... -queenbee/. I fully expect it to have weaknesses and issues to solve as I progress but it's cheap enough that I can modify or replace it in time as I discover them in my use case. On paper it looks perfectly capable of medium sized Wood, Plastic and light Aluminum work, which it what I'm after. It will be driven with an Acorn as I want the controller type to last beyond the machine and grow with me and Centroid seems to offer the best potential for that.

So that's where I'm at. To keep this shorter, I'll put up another post directly after this one with some pictures and progress.

As promised, some pics and details on my progress.

My 3018 cutting out a bracket for a computer fan mount.
Image

New bench built ready for the new machine.
Image

New machine arrives!
Image

Parts check, etc.
Image

Designing the control panel (still very much a work in progress).
Image

Bench testing (Still underway).
Image

Checking and prepping parts (Bearing Block cleaning ready for re-greasing)
Image

Working out the wiring for the control panel (also still in progress), this is the 110v Distribution where it's at at the moment.
Image

So that's where I'm at. Machine is here. Going through pre-checks, design and so on. Plan is to maybe start the mechanical assembly this weekend or alternatively if I have all the parts and I'm far enough on and comfortable in the design I might start the control panel instead. TBD.

To be continued...
Thx
Ian

nice thanks for posting, great photos.
consider making a google photo album for the project that way all photos / video will be in one spot, and post the link to the album here.

this is nice to have when squaring up a bolt together machine so you can get everything square.

Thanks for the link, I'll look into that.

I currently use imgur for photos because it's about the only thing that Reddit doesn't have a fit over. Easier to keep everything in one place. I'll make a CNC album though and post the link in a sig. Then people can see them all in one place.
Thx

Switch Panel Built and tested.

110v Distribution Rail is built and tested but I've decided to change out the PSUs for some smaller ones and add a relay for switch illumination so this will be modified.

Checking Bearings and Rails.

Today's update.

Test fitting the Control Panel Base Board.
Image

X and both Y Axis Sections assembled.
Image

Lower frame in place and starting to roughly align.
Image

Parts came in so updated 110v Rail. Ground/Common and LV Rails ready as well.
Image

Control Board Tetris? I think this is close to the final layout. Anybody see any issues/concerns with the layout strategy? I know it wastes a lot of space and goes overboard on Wire Duct but I have the space and the duct so might as well use it?
Image

Productive weekend.
Thx
Ian

The build is progressing nicely. Can we assume that you just did the electrical “layout” on the wood and you are going to use a metal backplane for all the electrical components? Yes? A wood backplane is NOT recommended at all for many reasons. Best option is galvanized steel or aluminum backplane.

Hi Shawn, yes, I am looking for a thin piece of metal in the right size to use but haven't found one yet. Thats why I'm still playing Tetris with the components.

Original plan was to get an off the shelf enclosure, but since I had the spare materials and the space in the frame, I went with the 'wood box'. The front and sides will be a project for the machine once its running.

Any issue with using smaller pieces as long as I connect them together and to the common block?
Thx
Ian

Not sure where you live as your location is not listed in your profile but do you have a metal supplier in your area? I guess you could use multiple smaller pieces and ground them all together but that seems like a lot more work to me.
