Acorn Output (Flood)

Post by Crosshatch »

Hi All,

I have an Acorn purchased in 2018, so the hardware is a bit different than today's layout. I did receive the relay board and the PCB Breakout harness from Acorn to the 8 channel relay board back in 2019. For today's question, let's ignore the 8 channel board and consider a sole relay being hooked up to one of the outputs.

Scratching my head here.

I have checked my I/O logic and all appears okay. I have no "white" line for Output 7 and it toggles accordingly when I use the VCP Flood Button.

What I don't understand is what type of voltage should I be seeing on the Acorn Output 7? My relay Coil is what I need to energize from Output 7 but is it suppose to be 24 VDC? I am getting absolutely NO reading on my multi-meter when checking Output7 whether I toggle Flood ON/OFF, so I can't energize any Relays at the moment.

Thanks all.

You need to provide your desired voltage to the com terminal of the relay. Usually the NO terminal goes to your device. There are examples of this in various schematics

I have a schematic for my board. Ignore the actual hot wire for the pump on relay contact side, my relay takes an input of 3-24vdc to energize, but I'm not getting a voltage on Output 7 via Acorn despite what looks like a pin that is working.

For today's question, let's ignore the 8 channel board and consider a sole relay being hooked up to one of the outputs.
If you mean that you are measuring voltage on the open-collector terminal on the Acorn board, here is what you should expect:
OUT7 On (green): Terminal closed to 0VDC
OUT7 Off (red): Terminal floating (not closed to any voltage)

So, if you are measuring voltage between the output terminal and 0VDC, you will probably not see any measurable difference between On and Off.

To see a difference (and to make use of the output) you need to compare it with the +5VDC side of a 5V supply, with the 0V (COM) side of that supply connected to one of the COM terminals on the Acorn output header.

In your case, you need to connect +5VDC to the plus side of your relay control circuit ("coil", except I assume this is a solid-state relay); you need to connect 0VDC to a COM terminal on the Acorn output header; and you need to connect the Acorn output terminal to the minus side of your relay control circuit.

Makes sense, I'll give it another look. Thanks for the in-depth breakdown.

Is it 5 VDC max on the output I can use?

The ratings for the relays are printed on them.

I meant with Acorn Output, I over complicated this and the question is not applicable.

I'll have 24 VDC going to the positive on Relay. Acorn Output 7 to the negative Relay and COM from 24 VDC to COM on output. Thanks again for the clarification.

My entire Panel really needs to be rewired but that's for another day...

Thanks all.

Quick test and we are good, thanks again.

Now I need to clean it all up.
