Techno CNC lathe build help

Post by pporto »

Picked this up with an Acorn board but not sure where to start on the build. I'm not sure where to start
I wanted to use the OEM motors to keep things simple but not sure if thats the best plan. Ideally would love a plug n play setup but dont think thats happening either. Saw this video running steppers and looks to be running really well but there is no information as far was size motors, drives etc

So I guess right now I'm looking for path of least resistance to get this thing going. I've thumbed through the VFD manual but I'm so :? :? :? I don't even know where to start or how to wire it to the acorn board

Hello. Start by collecting and providing information.
Start with Photos. Make a online photo album. Photos are worth thousands of words and we can see things you can't.(at this point)

This one seems way over my head as if I'm not already in over my head. I did (I think) want to copy the setup you had with the g540 and steppers just to keep it pretty straight forward and cost effective

Photo album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/VTYriVjgf7CSFxFo6

Ripped out the original board
3d printed mounts for the acorn boards
and thats as far as I have gotten. I don't think I've even opened the cover on it and not even sure if I need nema23 or 34 or what size.
I guess right now path of least resistance to get it running. Needs a chuck and tool holder but that can be later

Localish guy has his running on a mesa card with the OEM motors and gecko 320x drivers but he is unwilling to share his knowledge on how he got it working.

I'll update pics later this week

follow the G540 installation video by marty and the Acorn install manual, easy peasy.

ask specific questions here with good info and you will get help as you go.

Photo album updated:
I found that video yesterday and it seems very helpful. Any idea what size motors I should go with? Also I remember people used to have to put a resistor in the plugs for the g540 that go to the steppers. Is that still needed?

If I was to sell the old board and motors, any idea what they would be worth?

Is there a good video on how to wire the VFD?

pporto - check the name plates on your existing motors and google the spec sheets - these will give you an indication of the current torque / mounting dim's etc.
Note that the G540 maximum current for stepper is 3.5A, so you'll have to keep your new motors under this. Check out geckos resources here: https://www.geckodrive.com/support/g540-rev-8

Re: VFD - I'm not familiar with your drive, but the principle is pretty much the same for most of them. Fist of all you'll need to find the user manual as this will let you figure out the exact settings (and how to change them). In terms of wiring, check out my manual on wiring a different sort of drive here: https://github.com/Viking-Machinery/Vik ... %20Ltd.pdf
This is a different drive to yours, but the principle of wiring is essentially the same between drives. It's a Mach focused manual, but the actual wiring is likely to be pretty spot on for what you're doing. The G540 link has details on their spindle control options too.

Safety disclaimer time! Mucking around with wiring (especially with the VFD and "mains" voltages inside the cabinet) may be prescribed electrical work where you are. Make sure you are allowed to do this under your local jurisdiction, and if in doubt just get an electrician in to help you. It'll cost a bit, but not as much as trashing a machine tool or burning your workshop down!

Cheers - James

follow the Acorn installation manual for analog out spindlebenchtesting and vfd connections. see Acorn VFD schematics on the Acorn schematics page and follow the many video or documents describing how to calibrate the VFD.

Page22 shows the wiring terminals but none of it seems to make sense to me as to where it goes on the acorn board and which are/not needed
