I started on my Techno Lathe in 2019, I got it running with the Lenze VFD, but changed to a new VFD that had better features and ease of use.
I purchased a GS2 series AC micro drive, enclosed, 120 VAC, 1hp with 1-phase input (this may have been replaced by a newer version) for about $200.
I also installed a braking resistor (which I removed because I felt I didn't need it plus the screw on chuck).
I haven't done much with the lathe, but just starting to play with it and the mill.
I would recommend going with a newer VFD that may give less electrical noise and more functionality and better documentation.

I'm hesitant to put more money into it if I haven't even gotten it to spin yet

Tecnik ClearPath's servos.
My Lathe didn't have an encoder on it, I was able to add a pully to the spindle and belt 1:1 to an encoder.
