New Rebuild on Sherline Chucker Lathe & New build on 5400 mill
Hey all, this is a new thread for a rebuild on my Sherline Chucker lathe and Sherline 5400 mill with 4th axis. As per your guy's input and after having issues with the standard stepper motors I've decided to swap them out for closed-loop steppers and modern drives. Going to go with Keith and Marty's input for the Automation Technology kits. Thank you all for the input thus far.

The plan is to add new drives and steppers to my 1st Acorn build for the chucker lathe. Then build a 2nd dedicated Acorn control for the mill.

John At Automation technology says I will not need the calibration cable. What do you guys say? Will I need to reconfigure the drives?

I would choose other drivers with 24V inputs, so i can wire them to the headers.
I also use tuning software to configure drivers to my liking and for testing, but they will work also without tuning.

Re: New Rebuild on Sherline Chucker Lathe & New build on 5400 mill
Hey Guys,
Got my new motors and drives for the lathe. I ordered the KL-5080H drive/kit but they sent me Leadshine ES-D508 Easy Servo Drives. They seem to be the same as the KL-5080H drives so I'm assuming they are an upgrade from those or at least the same drive just labeled differently. ? Going to ask John at AT about it to clarify but figured I would get your input.
Question is, will the wiring document S15032 work for this drive? This DWG is for a Leadshine CS-D508 drive. This is the closest Leadshine drive model on the Acorn schematics page I found.
Also, Will Marty's video here work for the wiring? These 2 drives seem pretty much the same at least how they are all labeled.

Compare both manuals, if both drivers should be wired the same way, the wiring diagram from Centroid will work.

Re: New Rebuild on Sherline Chucker Lathe & New build on 5400 mill
Hey all, Im building my 2nd Acron control and am ready to hook up my drives and motors and bench test their function. Im undecided about using the current CNCPC for this new controller build OR purchasing a new one. The answer to these questions will help me figure out what my next step is.
Since this current CNCPC already has my 1st Acorn control connected to it can I swap out the Acorn board & control to this PC by simply swapping one ethernet cable for the other? OR are there settings or serial number info associated with the original PC?
Am I just better off getting a new PC for the NEW Acorn board/controller before I proceed?

Better to have one PC for one CNC.
I also would finish one machine and then start the other one, so no risk to duplicate errors and use what you have learned from the first one to make the second one better or faster.

Re: New Rebuild on Sherline Chucker Lathe & New build on 5400 mill
Maybe you misunderstood, Or I did not explain clearly. I will have 2 PCs, 1 for each controller/machine. Im just trying to figure out IF I should keep the current PC dedicated to the lathe or mill. As per your input Yes Im thinking the next PC I get will be a better one anyways. So maybe that's my answer wait till I get the new PC.
But I'm still wanting to know IF there is anything written to the PC somewhere that associates a particular Acorn board, that's what I really need to know.

Yes. There is a license file in the CNC? Directory.
Cheers,
Tom

Re: New Rebuild on Sherline Chucker Lathe & New build on 5400 mill
I set up my new CNCPC and bench-tested Acorn last night all is good. The drives I have are Leadshine ES-D508 from Automation Technologies. The drives I ordered were the KL-5080H but was told by John they are the same. So the question is what is my best option for Wizard set up as the Leadshine ES-D508 Is not in the default list. There is actually a selection for the KL-5080H drives BUT it is named (Automation Direct KL-5080H) IS it just listed wrong? There is yet another option for a Leadshine CS-D508.
What is my best option?
