Acorn, Clearpath,C86ACCP and contactor

Post by tuffduck »

Has anyone created an updated drawing utilizing Acorn, Clearpath,C86ACCP and contactor to control the power to IPC5?

No drawing, but I use a small 12A, 4 pole contactor for controlling up to 2 IPC-5's. It is powered 24vdc thru the No fault output

Thanks Gary, but I have no clue how to wire that?

Thanks but none of them include both a contactor and the C86 board. Both boards have no fault on each of them. Either the wiring diagram shows how to wire no fault between Acorn and C86 or Acorn and a contactor. There isn't a drawing involving all three.

If you don't feel confident merging the information from the various schematics, perhaps you can hire a machine integrator to do the conversion for you? Gary Campbell (above) does machine retrofits as well as both Marty of MartysCNCGarage and Marc of CNCSNW.

Thanks for the insight. Not sure they do house calls to Canada though. Sorry that I totally misunderstand what a user forum is. Just close this thread, as I must be the only one with this question.

Yes, you may have misunderstood some things. A user forum is driven by individuals that volunteer their time and expertise to assist those of lesser abilities. This is usually done in the hopes that the users that received the help will pay it forward and help others down the road. You seem to have the attitude that other users owe you some assistance, maybe even whatever assistance you feel is needed.

Centroid has provided very good schematics for connecting components to their Acorn controller. If you cannot comprehend placing more than one component into a series or parallel circuit that's on you, not us. Please note that the Y in DIY stands for yourself. We can tell you what to do, Centroid has shown you how to wire them, but if you can't understand basic circuitry, then you should either take the time to learn it properly or hire a local with knowledge of low voltage control circuits.

The C86ACCP is not well documented by the seller. My experience with it was beyond a terrible experience. IMO it is a project in process.

When the individual for support comments to the effect that 'most people don't understand how it works so we don't publish a manual for everything that it will do', that is a concerning statement for anyone with electronics knowledge and digital logic experience. I know others have had success with the board, so I can only comment on my experience. The C86ACCP is not a magic black box. It provides interface to the clear-path and Acorn with alot of jumpers and no published documentation what the jumpers do and how to troubleshoot. It could be considered a mystery box since there is not proper documentation published for it. I call it something else that I won't post here so I won't offend anyone.

I abandoned my C86ACCP and went to the 4-ch relay boards to support the HLFB circuitry for the ClearPath. Requiring more inputs for my system upgrades later, I elected to remove the 4-ch relay board and installed an Ether1616 from Centroid.

From your other thread I understand that both you and support do not have your C86ACCP working and are waiting for a replacement to be sent.
I would recommend that you determine if you are continuing down the C86ACCP design or going to an alternate supported wiring interface.

Get one part working correctly, then proceed to another. Crawl, Walk, Run.

FYI, I use C86ACCP boards as an interface board with clearpath systems. Like most others I was a bit confused by the manual. Here is the way I connect them:
24 v power is applied with acorn
The c86 reset terminals are jumpered
The fault relay terminals are used as instructed
I provide jumpers in the HLFB terminals to allow customers to bench test any combination of motors
Instructions are provided to set an input to DriveOk AFTER all motors are installed, autotuned and proper directions are set
Active Axis and Slave onboard jumpers are set as instructed.
Any time that you are dealing with so called "compatible" products from 3 mfgrs there is always an accumulation of intelligence that turns into stupidity. You just have to work it out by letting the hardware do its job, by dumbing down soft actions. This happens on my bench. This is what bench testing is all about. Making it work BEFORE you install it on a machine.

Here is a pic of my bench test setup:
